And I have a bunch of questions.

My general question is whether I should exchange it for another microphone around the same price.

My grandmother bought it for me after going up to Guitar Center (bleh) and asking what the best microphone would be for someone like me, who would mainly use it for rapping, singing and recording acoustic guitar. I've always thought that condenser microphones were better for this, am I wrong? This is a dynamic.

Any suggestions, even though I know that there's a different mic for everyone, would be greatly appreciated. I generally sing/rap loud, if that helps.

Also, since this has an XLR output, would I need to buy a pre-amp and/or interface to record on it onto my computer?

Thank you so much guys, I know these are probably the most commonly asked questions around here!

It would be a good microphone for RAP and your assumption with the interface with a preamp is correct.

Any suggestions for a cheaper pre-amp/interface?

freakin loads! how much time you got? :p

depending on your budget/plans for future recording, there's such a wide scope of interfaces. as solid starter interfaces that should keep you going;

focusrite 2i2
focusrite 8i6
presonus audiobox 22vsl
maudio fast track
motu 4 pre

that's five that spring to mind and i know there's alot more but i'd say have a look at those as a starting point and see what you think/what others suggest.

and if you search the forums for any of those i'm sure you'll find some useful opinions

and the e838 is by no means a bad mic and if you've got a particularly loud voice you may find it works quite well so just give it a shot :)

Great suggestions, I'm checking them out right now!

Is it worth spending under 100 for a pre-amp/interface, or are those not good-enough quality? Because I'm on a tight budget here, I was looking to spend more along the lines of $50-$75... hahaha.

The only one i can think of under £100 (sorry, I'm in the UK and $'s don't make much sense) that seems ok is the Alesis IO2. i was very tempted by the Alesis IO16 a while back but by the time i'd saved up they'd discontinued it and the ebay prices didn't seem any cheaper that it was new.

Just think of it as an investment. plus, somebody already bought you a mic so you've already saved yourself at least half of the cash you'd have to spend other wise on an initial setup :D

It seems the e838 is only available in the USA - it's not on the main Sennheiser website and it's not on the UK website - it's only on the Sennheiser USA website.

So it looks like a special mic. for the USA only.

i found it here on the marlin website but couldn't find any real specs for it

I could only find it on the Sennheiser USA website HERE.

Maybe Maplin are bringing them in from the USA or have done a special deal with Sennheiser UK so that they are the only dealer.

I certainly could not find it on the UK or main head office websites.

crazy coloured notes with some old ladies face on it that always makes you feel like you're being watched by your gran

Yikes - same here. But it's only George Washington that looks like an old lady on our funny money. ;)

yeah it's weird. there's a couple of uk stores stocking it (google it and look in the shopping tab) but, as you said, no info at all on the uk sennheiser website! may be that it's being distributed in the uk by someone other than sennheiser

moresound - George Washington seems slightly cooler. at least he didn't have a stupid crown ;)
