Just got a Frenzel Tube Amp

I got the 5E3 model with separate Fender and Marshall type inputs.

The first thing I noticed is how quiet it is. I tried it out with my Strat first and loved the tone; especially nice in positions 2 and 4. Nice crunch when you crank the gain a little.

I tried it with my Ibanez semi-hollow next and it sounded great.

This thing is great for what I do - mostly clean tones, occasionally some light crunch rock and roll stuff, plenty of tone control. There's a line out jack that I haven't tried out yet.

Haven't cranked it all the way up yet, it'll be interesting to see what the high gain sounds like.

Jim Frenzel is a great guy to deal with and very reasonable price wise.
 
Congrats on the new amp. I've heard of the amps,but I've never heard one. How much did you pay for it? Will you be able to make any clips so we can hear what it can do? :)
 
I was all prepared to be snobby about it, but it looks like a killer little amp. Point to point, a lot of fun features, solid iron. Nice buy!

He's running a special on that particular model; $465 plus shipping. It took about 7 weeks to build.

This is my first tube amp (other than a Epiphone Valve Junior) so I really don't have frame of reference, but I really like the way it sounds. Until now I'd never experienced an amp that could sound clean with mild picking, and then go to crunchy just by picking harder.

I may get a chance to put some clips up this weekend.

I've got a 4 banger by Frenzel that I love. Jim's a great guy, and very reasonably priced for handmade stuff. I run mine through a couple of Scumbacks and it sounds awesome.

I've built two clones. One is Tone Works 1x12 with an Emnence Govenor, the other is an Ear Candy 1x10 with an Eminence Copperhead.

Not knocking your speakers, but..... I suggest you not rest easy until you have tried the Weber 100 watt Blue Dog. Best I've ever had, only the Tonker comes close for overall quality....

The earcandy is a nice piece, they do good work. I just wish I woulda got the open back instead of the closed....
 
Interesting. 25 watts is plenty of power for a tube amp, especially going into a multi speaker cabinet. Add an AB-Y switch and you can switch between the Marshall and Fender sounds, with only one amp! I like it! And the price is right......dammit, GAS. :mad:

I like the clean sounds I get through it. I'm still sorting out what I think about the overdriven sounds.

I've noticed this 'sound' that occurs when I drive it with the amp volume all the way up. I've heard the term 'farting' used by people and I wonder if that's going on. You'll play with medium pressure on the strings and it sounds fine, nice and crunchy, then hit a power chord hard, and the sound just kind of squashes or compresses in an unflattering way...kind of like a burrito fart. Could be the speaker, could be the amp, I'm not sure.
 
It's definitely not the amp. The farting I talked about only seems to happen in the detuned enclosure w/ 12" Govenor speaker. Much tighter response with the smaller tuned port enclosure with 10" Copperhead.
