Just got a Delta 66 but can't record....

Hey guys I just got a Delta 66 sound card and im loving it....sort of. I can't figure out how to record my guitar in cool edit pro or any of my recorders for that matter. I can get sound to come out if I plug headphones into one of the outs on the box. It's just no sound is being played on the computer. I've set the delta 66 as the recording input device and everything. I can't figure it out!

Also, is it normal for it to be in mono? When I record my guitar tracks am I gonna have to record once on the left side then record again on the right side?

1) All of the inputs and outputs on the Delta66 are mono, and they are all line level. You shouldn't be plugging headphones into it, unless you got the omni studio package.

2) You will most likely record your guitar in mono, but the mono track in your recording software will be fully pannable and will by default be adjusted center. So no, you don't have to record it twice (not for that specific reason anyhow). To monitor the signal in both L&R channels while recording, adjust the little pan slider underneath the appropriate channel in the Delta Control Panel. If you don't see a pan slider in the delta control panel, then you need to get updated drivers from m-audio.com.

3) All of the inputs will be muted and all faders set to - infinity in the Delta Control Panel. Before you can record, you have to unmute the channel and bring the fader up.

Ok cool I figured out how to record, (thanks slackmaster) but its still in only one channel. I updated my drivers and screwed with the slider and when I move it to the right it just gets quieter.....

I would like for it to be centered and then just pan it in cool edit pro. I do plan on recording more than one guitar so I guess it doesnt matter too much but I'd still like to know for playback purposes. My left ear is going def but my right ear isn't. I need unity!!!
 
When you start a new file in CEP, have it set to mono, not stereo. If you have it set to stereo it will only go to one channel because the inputs are mono. If the new file is mono then it will center it and then you can split the channel into 2 and what not. I hope this helps, i don't know how to start a new file in mono in CEP because i don't own it. Maybe someone else who does can help if you can't figure it out.
 
The whole "mono/stereo" thing is confusing for some people at first.

Just because you have a mono track in your recording software doesn't mean that track only plays back through one channel. Just like a real mixer, your recording program is going to have a stereo main bus. You can pan that mono track onto the main bus however you want - left, center, right, or anywhere in between. Panning mono tracks onto the main bus is the normal way things work...stereo tracks, on the other hand, really don't appear much in nature, although your recording software will allow them (panning them is a little weird).

The slider I mentioned in the Delta control panel allows you to monitor a single input in stereo. It doesn't effect how the track will actually be recorded. So, for instance, you're laying down some bass, going into input #1 on the Delta. Normally, you'd only hear the bass out of the left channel, because input #1 on the Delta is left. This can make it hard to get enough level to hear what you're doing if you have other tracks playing back while you record. So you slide the little pan slider underneath input #1 in the Delta Control Panel into the center, and voila, you can hear your bass out of both speakers, even though it's only technically being recorded from input #1.

Ok about the recording issue...I've been having to plug a 1/4 to 1/8 cable from the output in my delta 66 box to the line in on the soundblaster soundcard. Is this hurting my sound in anyway...it seems like it should be. I can't figure out how to record right off the delta 66. Hewp meh!

It's the only way (i've figured out) how to record. I wanted to be able to just go straight from the delta 66 soundcard and not even have to fool with the soundblaster.(I was just gonna use the soundblaster for playback)
 
Holy smokes, you need to just hooold on a second :)

First of all, forget the soundblaster.

Secondly, I can't think of any reason why you'd want to record from the output of the Delta? If you want to record using the delta, then you just record from it...run your sources into the inputs. Make sure in your software that you select the delta inputs as your input devices.

Thirdly, for monitoring you'll also be using the Delta. Outputs 1 & 2 should be set to Monitor Mixer in the Patch Panel tab of the Delta Control Panel.

I guess I'm just having a hard time envisioning what you're trying to do. If you want to record with the Delta, then running it into the soundblaster won't help.

so let me get this straight

I just got an omni studio and am struggling with the same concept.

The normal way to do this is to record "with all the sound in the left channel or input 1" for instance and then pan it afterwards however you want it?
 
Well, that's how it would work if you recorded from inputs 1 or 3, because they are both "left" (e.g. delta inputs are logically grouped into stereo pairs). You will only hear what you're playing through the left channel.

However, the recorded track will just be a normal mono track, and will be panned center by your software. (mono can't actually be left or right, it's just mono. Your software, like a real mixer, mixes the mono track onto the main bus, which is stereo, however you want it)

The delta control panel does have a neat feature by which you can pan how you monitor an input. Each input has a slider underneath it that allows you to pan it for monitoring. This does not in any way impact how the track is recorded - it'll still be a normal mono track.
