Hi all,

Im new to the whole idea of home recording. I admit I have used my computer a few times to record, i blame my Soundblaster Live for giving me bad sound. I also have a Yamaha Mt1x 4 Track recorder, its old its dirty but it works. I am looking to get into digital and use my computer for the final mix and copy. But i should ditch the Sound blaster live? Im guessing yes since its only 16bit 44k. Hows the new Audigy 2? With 24bit record. Anything else out there. Remeber im up here in Canada, not much for selection on the internet. But what else is good for digital recording? Any track recorders have digital output my live drive has digital input. Well any advice would be great. Thanks

Welcome Keith,
Want to get the best you can, with what you have? I've used similar in this way. I use a Yamaha MT120 as a 4 chanell mixer and peramp, then go out through the monitor outs to the line in on the SB Live card. This works pretty well, not as good as the pro equipment but it will improve on what the SB Live can do by itself. Keep posting and asking questions, I've asked some pretty dumb ones and still gotten some really good answers, we have all learned from our mistakes and most are glad to help others to avoid a few of the same ones. Good luck, it's a lot of trial and error to find what works best for you, there is a lot of software and hardware to choose from, ask about it before you buy, someone else has tried it and can advise you. Welcome to the board Keith! It's good that you asked before you went out and plopped money down on this or that. Keep in mind that everything that you add into your signal chain may someday become its weakest link. What I did was improve the sound chain starting from the source and onward to the speakers. If you decide to take this route someday you may find a need to change your SB live but I say start with checking into some good microphones and then checking out a good pre-amp and mixer. Oh ya, and you're going to need a limiter and compressor. The SB does well even though it's only 16 bit if your signal into it is good. You might even want to purchase a couple of nice near field monitors to do your mixing with. Another suggestion for you is to post your budget when asking about what equipment to buy. There's all kinds of dudes here that will help you spend your dollars as long as they know what you're willing to spend. Happy hunting!
