First time posting on what is a very noobish question so bear with me as I stumble through.
Basically I'm looking to podcast using the PC and the following items I've purchased:
Behringer Xenyx 1204 USB
Mic
Headphones
Cables

I have the USB cable plugged into my Win10 PC and on the 1204 I have a microphone and a pair of headphones plugged into the Phones jack. On the PC I have Playback and Recording set to USB Audio CODEC. Once the 1204 is on I can hear sound from the PC through the headphones and I can hear myself speaking into the Mic. What I can't seem to do is record a session. For instance I use Screencast-O-Matic to record videos. In it there's an option to select a microphone to use for narrating. The only mics to appear are the default and the one installed on the PC. So if I try to record a video I can't use the mic. I feel like I'm missing something really simple. When recording or maybe periscoping, or podcasting through an application shouldn't I be able to use the mic?

Behringer response:

You can't playback and record at the same time. Sending the USB to the mains will mute the recording.
You can send the USB directly to the monitor/headphone. But then you won't hear your live signal.

So what I'm trying to do is makes sense of what this means. Is this a limitation in the hardware? Am I going about this the wrong way?

Any responses appreciated

I don't podcast but I suspect that software will not allow you to select an external USB sound source.
Try downloading "ASIO4ALL" and see if that fixes the problem.

There is shedloads of free and free for a time SOUND recording software. One that I think a lot of "podders" use is Audacity? I am not sure what you can get for free for video recording but you can get 30day trials of Camtasia, Sony Vegas and Cubase, all will do video.

Not sure about Behringer's reply? Surely all you want to do is hear yourself in headphones as you speak and have that record via USB? That must work.

Dave.
