Smart devices make you stupid.

The promise of AI was that it would take care of all the mundane tasks we hate to do, like cleaning the bathroom or doing the laundry, to allow humans to be the creative individuals they are, when in fact AI has already stolen every piece of intellectual property and has kicked the creatives to the curb to be relegated to cleaning the bathrooms.
Not to mention robbing us of basic skills.
Since the invasion of computers and smart phones, my handwriting has gone to shit.

Oh, and with the ‘increased’ communication aspect of technology there’s less real live communication going on.
How many times has someone you know texted you, you call them and they don’t answer the phone? But they’ll text you back about how they can’t talk.

How about Christmas and birthday cards received in the mail?
Those days are gone. This year I got ONE! Yes only one. Earlier times you’d get a bunch trickling in over the holidays and they’d become part of your Christmas decorations. Nowadays you get a bunch of Merry Christmas texts.

Yeah, I ain’t digging it. And here I am contributing to the problem by venting on an anonymous music forum.

We are all doomed to a Black Mirror style new normal.

I look back in amazement at the pre cellphone/internet era.

Somehow you could put together players to do a session in the studio in a half an hour! And that included drive time.

The most amazing aspect was that you had the telephone numbers stored in your head.

Yes, the ‘cloud’ between your years. :D

?
Twas text messaging that nearly killed the Hallmark Card Company forcing it to create the Hallmark TV Channel (Christmas movies) employing starving actors and actresses in Hollywood. ?

For personal or business- if it's not simple and warrants more than a sentence or two - I insist that people call me or I initiate a call. You and I are going to talk, goddammit. I do this every day.

I've gotten back to reading. Actual books.

I'm a hard-ass with my workers. Be on time - all the time - and keep your f**king phone in your pocket.

I NEVER let my phone interrupt a face to face meeting or conversation. It can wait. We were fine before these godammed things - and we'll be fine now.

I still support and read the local monthly community print newspaper - while it's still alive and available.

And anything else that ebbs up against an increasingly fast pace and increasingly short attention spans.

I'm not going down without a fight.

Apologize for the tangent - i just feel strongly about that.

I've always read, I was even in "great books" in 7th grade. But I am finding it much more difficult as I get older, even with glasses. On the computer, I can adjust the the brightness and increase the font size so that it's easier, but if I don't have really good light, the small print is still really difficult to read. When I'm walking through Target, I'll check out the book area, but I currently have 8 books that are on the shelf waiting to be read. I continue to get a few magazines, although one just ceased publication, and my subscription was moved to a sister publication.

I don't know if we consider books as analog, but in any case, it's someplace that digital delivery has some advantages. On the other hand, I don't care for Ebooks. I've only had one and for some reason I struggled just to get through it.

Riffing around on the larger subject....

With just recently getting back to reading books - I'm just looking for ways to slow down my busy life, busy pace. I miss a slower time. My life is so damned complicated and has so many moving parts - I told my wife recently - my happiness is suffering. I have enough money, and stuff, and opportunity. But, at 56, I just don't care about that stuff as much anymore. I want simple. Slow(er). Walks and hikes in the country and reading in bed and falling to sleep early. And I've quit drinking and smoking herb. I may dabble there again at some point - but I'm taking at least a year off, exercising more, and eating better.

Although, in a sense it adds some complication, I miss playing music with other people. So I've done a complete 180 on that and am now actively looking for a new band to join. Already have several good leads for low pressure local things with older, stable, responsible people like myself. I've been inactive from that for about 12 years now. And that's been interesting because I realized that with that decision came the reality that I have a bad back - I can't lift and haul my beloved 59 Bassman Reissue which has been the heart of my main gigging rig for 25 years. No way I can move that thing around anymore. I own some really great modelers - so I've decided to go with one of those into an FRFR cab. The Fender FR-12, specifically. But yeah.... I went down the rabbit hole of lighter rig options before deciding.

Back to books.... my wife reads books on her Kindle. I'm not opposed to it. I may get one. And I'm not opposed to Audible. In fact, I just finished "Great Expectations" with Audible. I'd read it as a 12 year old but decided to re-read it. So I listened to it this time. Cool thing with Audible is that you can control the speed in very small increments. That's a nice feature.

Again - sorry to wander so far off topic.

If I could live in a all analog town/community I’d move there in an instant.

... and the sound coming from the speaker from a digital recording is analog. In the end, it's all the same!
