Just Built this cheap computer setup.

Bought this $99 special from Tiger Direct.

Soyo K7VMP2 Motherboard
Athlon 2400XP
Ultra 256 M pc2100
Copper CPU fan

While I was at it, I picked up an ATI 7000 dual monitor output video card for $30 too.

The motherboard has the Via 400 chipset so I was a bit worried about it working with my M-Audio 1010. Actually, I was wondering if this thing would work at all.
I used the newest VIA 4 in 1 drivers and the newest M-Audio drivers. A fresh install of XP and sonar.

This thing works great!!

I haven't had a problem with plugins or number of tracks. No tweaks in XP. The M-Audio settings are default. I get ~10 ms latency at 48khz.

So, if anyone was wondering about these "deals", it works good for me.

It'll be fine. I've built a few of those Soyo kits, and they're not bad. Not the best, but not bad either.
 
Thats very cool. It really shows off the Bang-For-Buck ratio in PC recording. Admittedly, not a top-end system, it sounds like it would kick the crap out of a similarly-priced cassette-based 4-track! heh heheheh. Rock on.

256Mb, XP Pro and Sonar??? You must like pain...


Upgrade to at least 512Mb
 
I worked with only 256MB of pc2100 ram for a while and it worked fine. You may have to come up with "workarounds" whenever you computer can't handle it. I usually would copy all of the tracks and archive them and then apply all of the real time effects destructively. Its a pain, but it works.

RAM is so cheap now - there is no good reason not to upgrade.
 
Before I built this one I was using a 500MHZ celeron. That worked great except that I had to take it easy with the plugins or I would get dropouts. I have yet to see a dropout with this machine.

My typical mix is this:
8 tracks drums
3-6 tracks guitar
1 bass guitar
1-3 vocals

Not that much, so maybe I'm far from overloading this system.
I will, based on the advice from this board, upgrade the RAM when I catch a sale on it.
Otherwise, a few weeks and it's still workin great!
