Just bought a new mic and downloaded Reaper - what should I use for connecting a mic?

I have the box that came with an old version of pro tools lying around - will that work or should I get something else? Would a USB mic plug in be okay or should I get something better?

My eventual aim is to learn enough about home recording to get rather professional sounding home recordings done. I'll be using live instruments for the most part, so that's definitely a factor.

Define 'box'.

The inline XLR to USB converters are pretty basic devices. How much did you spend on the mic? Stereo/twin channel external audio devices are not huge amounts, unless you need mega performance to match the very expensive mic you bought. As you've gone for free software, then I'm guessing you have a nice, modest mic. A bit more info and we can move on.

If it is a protools input device, then assuming you have/can get the drivers, it may have multiple channels, phantom power and lots of outputs. It could also be a very complex, high quality doorstop!

We can't help much without knowing what mic. you have bought.
