For the sake of learning, as far as mixing/mastering goes.......could we maybe start picking an album release (new/old) and start pulling apart the production on it?

Just as an example, right now I'm learning about compression and being a bit of a Beatle nut I know that Revolver happens to be compressed to hell when being compared to Rubber Soul (the album before it). I can hear the difference but I dont know what I'm listening to - does that make sense?
Could it be the upgrade in amps? The use of headphones for the first time, which allowed for a better tracking environment? I dunno I'm trying to figure it out.

We dont have to look at just Beatles or just 60s stuff, in fact the more diverse this gets as far as album choices go the better for all - we could all learn something by listening to music we may not usually pick up.

Thoughts......

Sounds like an idea. I, and I'm sure most others here, pick subjectively apart every song we hear. So discussing it would be great. :D

wooohooo, glad someone thinks its a good idea....there'd be so much to learn and no doubt a lot of varying opinions especially when it comes to the gear used.

Definitely!

I saw, on another forum, this kind of discussion with the engineer from the thriller album, Bruce Swedien. It was an amazing thread!

So...what song?

It's pretty easy, even for me, to pick apart a song and figure out how it was produced. But trying to copy that or use it in my own stuff is where I have a hard time. :(

I think it's a great idea. Who cares if people argue, etc. It will still be a wealth of info and oppinions people can take back an experiment with.

i wouldnt be able to contribute, but I probably would learn a hell of a lot from that. I hope you guys do end up doing something like this, good idea.

I felt the same and wasn't going to suggest this idea but I think if you listen to music and or record music then absolutely you have something to contribute.

My only suggestion might be to assign a certain amount of posts to a certain band/genre and then move to another band/genre, otherwise, it's going to be all over the place finding something that interests a particular person. Plus, the limit might encourage people to post more readily.

Elementary my dear Watson.....smashing suggestion :p

Maybe someone should start a thread in the next day or so and lets kick start this thing.

Album or song and artist in the thread title....easy:D

Are you asking for is for someone with an engineer's ears to describe what they are hearing in a given song to those here who don't have the ears yet? Or are you asking for someone who is familiar with or possibly involved inthe original production to actually discuss gear and techniques used?

If it's the former, I'd much prefer to see a title provided and a question or two about what they hear, and let everyone figure out the answers themselves. That'll build one's ears better than hand-feeding canned answers will, IMHO.

If it's the latter, you're probably on the wrong BBS; other than Harvey Gerst, there aren't a whole lot of name brand engineers hanging out here.

G.

Absolutely the former, the idea is for people like me to learn and train their ears.

Well ... since you started this thead ....

I nominate YOU to go first.

So, um, what do you want to talk about? :D

yeah, and this will also limit the beatles coverage... never saw what was so amazing about them, would like to see discussions that stray away from the usual bealtes and pink floyd dark side of the moon discussions... i.e. there's probably 20 books on both subjects available that list every detain, including what colour shits they were taking on each day.
