hey folks, just quick one. To do the wave thing for the comp. cd am I correct in doing this. Take my audio cd and record it to a data cd using the wave setting, instead of the mp3 setting in my software. I've never done this before so let me know if this is wrong.

Thanks,

Dan

Sometimes it's hard for people to grasp the difference between audio and data CD's....don't worry, it's a common question.

An audio CD doesn't consist of "files", it consists of audio tracks. The way that audio data is configured on the CD is different from the way data is configured on a data CD. That's why you can't just "copy" audio tracks from a CD, you have to use ripping software. When you rip an audio track, you're not guaranteed a perfect copy of the original audio, although your chances improve greatly if you use good software. It's also kind of a pain to rip as compared to just copying.

A data CD consists of data files...any data files. A jpg image is a data file, a wave is a data file, an MP3 is a data file, a Word document is a data file, every single thing on your hard drive is a data file! When you create a data cd, you are essentially "copying" the files to the CD, and later they can be copied back. You're guaranteed to get a perfect copy of your file, or no copy at all.

Just because you burn a wave file to a CD doesn't mean that the CD is an audio CD. You have to tell your CD authoring software what kind of CD you want to burn. Now, your particular software might default to "audio" when you throw a wave file at it, so you might have to fiddle a bit.

Your comp cd submission needs to be a standard 16bit / 44.1khz wave file burned onto a CDR as data.

I asked this question last time and it was slack that answered it..

yo dan, I think your using Music Match?

If so, press the 'burn' button and it brings up the burn screen..

options--->Disc---->Change Type--- then select Data.. That's how it is on the most recent version of Music Match.. I only select Wave to burn a listening Cd, or one that will be ripped to mp3..

thanks dudes, I think I got it. Now, do you use a data cdr or an audio cdr? Or does it matter?

Any CD-R should do the trick. For a while I used CD-RW's (rewritable) to check mixes in my truck because my stereo plays them and I could write over them, but cdr's are so cheap I don't use cdrw's anymore because erasing them is time consuming. Both CDR's and CDRW's can be used for data or audio though. You just have to specify what you want it to be in your software when you're setting up to burn.

I hope this made sense for ya....

You'll just want to use a regular CDR. I'm not sure exactly what the "audio CDR's" are, but....they'll probably work too I'd bet.

I think he just means his store-bought CD.

Well, there are several models of CDR that are advertised as being for audio only. Probably just a marketing scam though.

LOL. Ya you're probably right...i have no clue.

how about this, if I record the file on to a "reg" cdr, how can I check it to see if I'll be sending something to Slack that is correct.

and another thing, I can't get the contract to print with my info filled in. I tried 3 times. When I click on the space and type in info, when I go to the next spot and click, the stuff I clicked before goes back to what is on the blank contract.

damn, you guys are fucking with me. there's a deadline and I just want to send in a freaking tune.

Are you allowed to just fill in the freaking paper by hand?

You still having a problem? Others aren't reporting the same issues.

There wasn't enough room on the forms to allow adequate space for everything without going into multiple pages and blah blah. Besides, I figured that acrobat was universal and pretty easy.

Let me know if you have any more questions. I'm moving this thread to the comp cd forum.

For what it's worth, I had no trouble modifying the fields and printing the document. I don't have Acrobat (just Acrobat Reader) so I can't save it, but the modified form printed fine for me.

yes Slack, what's up? I even got my wife to try filling in and printing the contract, and no luck. I can print the contract, it just comes out with no fill-in info.

Can I just fill it out by hand? As long as I sign and initial it, then it's valid.

Dan

That's really weird dude. Let me investigate a little furthur.

You can't just fill it in by hand because there are no blanks...or are you saying that you just get blanks?

What version of acrobat? 4 or 5? It should work with 4 and should definately work on 5. If you're using 3 or earlier it probably won't work at all.

Don't sweat it...keep me informed...we'll get you hooked up!

sure, I did find a way to print the contract with blanks. So I have a printed copy now with blank space where the submitter's info goes. Will that be ok?
