Anyone else with half a brain wanna let me know what they think was used to record the guitar on Hurt?

Great song!Sounds like a large diapham to me, at a distance{just a guess}..Well 1/2 the brain likes the song the other half doesn't know the mic and tech. :D :)

Thanks ...I am more interested in if it is just a preamp with compression? Or if there is something else there I just don't hear...

Damn I was just going to ask that question. Whatever it is it sounds really nice. I dont hear any natural reverb on the guitars in that cd but it still sounds good to me. If you listen closely to the guitars on hurt you can hear an occasional fret buzz or a finger sliding across the string. When I heard that I said Yes, thats it. Thats how they should be recorded. Its kinda like leaving the rough edges on.

Rick Rubin produced that and he always uses a shit load of compression and very little reverb. It was probably run through a Distressor or something like that.

What happened to this thread? I posted a reply yesterday, and now it's gone?! Strange.

Anyway. I agree: *lots* of compression, on the voice as well. On the "Unchained" album they mostly used the AKG 451 on guitar. But I think in this case the compressor and its settings are more important than the microphone.

??????????

Is that anything like a De-esser? I have never heard of a distressor.

Okay...I just did a search on distressor. So basically it "compresses" the peaks, without really squashing the sound? Correct? Any info of that acually works physically?

So how is that really different from compression.

It isn't.

Those are just very good compressors known for having a signature sound that is more analog or tape sounding. They aren't RNC's and they sure as hell aren't Composer Pro's.

So would something like Gryaf's or this thing would be able to accomplish both stereo-typical compession and distressing?

Once you get into that quality range they are all just different flavors. Fletcher's forum has a lot of threads that talk about the differences. I don't have access to that kind of stuff so I couldn't be too accurate.

The Distressor, Fatso and HEDD are known for adding a slight touch of distortion which is what people think of when they want that Toob or analog warmth for digital recording. The difference is that those units actually do it well.
