Last night Joe Walsh had a little spot on Jonny Walker's programme "Cruisin'" He was there as a preview of a London show about the anniversary of the Strat.

During the 15 minutes he was on air the man had a lot to say about himself, some facts about the business, the times we live in and technology.

I guess most of us will know what Joe Walsh stands for, but for anyone who does not, here some facts:

Joe Walsh became a member of the Eagles around 1975, before that period he already had made some solo-albums, and he is still going today under his own name and as a member of the Eagles.

He said that he had his first Strat in '63 but had the Fender catalogue for already five yrs. hidden in between his schooltextbooks. So he was looking at the pictures all the time, while pretending doing his schoolwork..............

One of his reasons for taking up gtr. was to be able to get closer to the girls, do not know whether he has been successful or not..........

At first he was just copying Venture songs, just figuring out how everything worked. Then, mid 60s Hendrix came along, and everything changed: No more "just standing on stage while playing the songs" No, from now on you could run around and act like a wild man. This was sth. which Joe seemed to enjoy as he is a promoter of Chaos and Fun.

During the 1975 tour the Eagles introduced Joe Walsh on stage by opening a fight-case and out came Joe to do his mad-man stunts.

On the programme of last night he played on a Stat unaccompanied, just did some solo's and the into to "Life in the Fast Lane". He was joking with the prducer of the programme about his sloppyness and the fact that he did not have a plectrum on him.............

He also mentioned the fact that these days it is rare for artists to be on the same bill, so having a change to play toghether on some songs. Well coming Friday he will be, as he is on the same bill with the likes of Jeff Beck and others to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Stat.

Anyone else here who does know some facts, annecdotes or little stories about players we may want to hear?

Cheers,

Eddie

Guess there's more to Joe than I knew, 'cause I wouldn't have picked him as an obvious choice to be part of a Strat party. Always kind of thought of him as a Les Paul (or at least humbucker) kind of guy.

He rarely plays a strat. He has always been a Telecaster or Les Paul player. I am sure he showed up for the party...

Ok, I just checked some sites. He does use a black strat on occasion also a Rickenbacker and Gretsch. My apologies Joe, enjoy the party

True True True,

Joe is more know for the Les Paul, just goes to show that people will use anything eh? Perhaps at home, or in studio he may use more different gtrs. than only the Paul.

Any more stories someone could tell to us about a gtr.player we may like to read about here..........?

Leslie West from Mountain, this goes back a few years, used to play slide guitar with a spark plug wrench because his fingers were so large a standard slide didn't fit.

Pete Townsend used to destroy his guitar at the end of the WHO shows. He would break the neck by banging the instrument on the floor then swing it into his Marshall stack destroying the speakers too.

Joe Walsh used to tweak his own amps by replacing the capacitors on the input channels. He was quite the techie in his day.

Jimi Hendrix was one of the first guitarist to have his pickups custom wound. The little know technician that did this for him was none other than Seymour Duncan.

I cannot find any evidence that this story is true, or even that I haven't constructed it in my own mind for that matter.... but I seem to recall a really funny interview with Joe where he was talking about a night when himself and another famous musician (who I can't remember either) were extremely intoxicated and playing around with a home made talk box that Joe had built himself, and Joe nearly electrocuting himself as the night wore on. Wish I could remember the details, 'cause it was a very funny story.

Rock & Roll Jeopardy...

i saw Joe on this show (it ran on VH1 for awhile ) anyhoo he was terrible he couldn't get any right but the saddest things of all was he was one of the answers and even he didn't get it right .....i love Joe Walsh he is one of my influences but the dude has gone through a few brain cells in his time :D

No one mentioned his work with The James Gang; in my opinion, this was some of the best work.

I heard a rumour that he turned up with a Les Paul... :D :D :D

Does it matter with what he turned up? He could even have turned up with a spanner!

Is this all info which is supposed to make up a good storey?

Well for some it is for others it isn't, just check what happened to the Mick Mars/C.C thread...........................

It is oh so funny eh?

Cannot change the world here eh? Try to come up with sth. a little different for the "Who is the Best" [or Worst] and leave it on purpose open so anyone can come up with who- or what they want to discuss, and look what happens? More jokes about whether the man really plays a Strat or.............There were even some of you who thought I made the whole thing up...................

My motivation for posting this thread was, as mentioned before, to create a place where we could sth. say about players we like or dislike or guys we may even be neutral about. I chose the example of Joe as a total spontaneous thing: Heard him on the radio, his words sounded fun, and he did have sth. to say, so I though: "Let me use this as an opener". But it was just an example, from there we could go into who-or whatever...........

If you do want to hear that programme for yourself click on www.bbc.co.uk/radio 2 and search for Johnney Walker's programme crusin' the date of the programme was 22 or 23 of Sept. You can listen again to it by using the "Listen Again" icon.

Cheers,

Eddie

Hello Lesterpaul,

sth. stands for something, yes I do not blame you as you did not guess that one. Talking about abbreviations I did not know[that is until yesterday] what lol means. I asked one of my pupils [he is 14] and said without hesitating: "Oh that means Laugh Out Loud". Also asked him if it was frequently used here in England. He said it was probably more something for young people, being used on the internet and during SMS messages. Asked him whether his mum would know the meaning of lol, and he said: "Probably not"

So there we go, all makes up for communication eh? Oh btw hope I did not offend anyone with my previous remarks about the state of the tread. It is all a very spontaneoues affair, and what one person has in mind is so different from what another person wants to write about. It also has to do with intentions, interpretation and culture as well.

Guess I get way to deep and serious now, so back to you lot.

Cheers,

Eddie

When I was in college my next door neighbor's boyfriend was Joe Walsh's guitar tech. He'd go on tour with Joe, come home with all the guitars and work on them. I couldn't tell you what models were there in the living room the one time I saw them, but I am almost certain that there were no Strats.

I'm sittin' here thinking the same thing. I guess I just feel sorry for everyone here who thinks that Joe's career began with the Eagles. You've got the James Gang, Barnstorm, Solo Stuff. Hell, I saw him play at the Whisky back in the mid 70's. There's a whole lot to Mr. Walsh.

Anyone see him on the Drew Carey show? Drew is looking for a guitarist for his band. He auditions all these guitarists (Slash, Johnny Lang, a bunch of other heavies) and they are all too good. Joe Walsh auditions, and Drew decides Joe sucks bad enough to be in their band. Pretty funny.

not me, i mean my first taste was from the Eagles(i'm 38) but when i found out about the james gang i knew right away it was the best stuff

I'm not sure if it's in the liner notes of the CD but I remember on the James Gang Rides Again album it said.... "Made Loud to be Played Loud". God, those were the days. I must have listened to that album a million times.
