Great, I got one.
what would it work best on?
Depends. For one it makes my vocals bearable, therefore it's priceless. But the primary reason that I bought it is to preamp my bass.

C7- do you actually own a Cactus? What's your experience with it.
Meanwhile, back at the thread, I use a Joemeek twinQ and it's one of the best purchases I've made. It's not the right sound for everything, but for a lot of things, I use it in preference to my Avalon, and that's saying a lot.-Richie

I own the JoeMeek MQ3 - and it has outstanding preamps. compressors and equalizers. I own a Korg D1600 SIAB and using the Meek with this for vocals, bass, guitar work inicreases headroom and provides a warm sound quailty to the mix.

I think they're great to have around.

Personally, I feel they work best on electric guitar, and/or anything that's just really loud. Like if you have a screamer vocalist, a drummer who prefers playing like Keith Moon or David Grohl (Nirvana days), etc.

(They have a lot of headroom, so they can take a lot)

For the price, there really are no other compressors that compare to it, other than maybe that in the Focusrite Platinum range or the M-audio Tampa. It's an opto-compressor, which means it's going to give it a certain characteristic on transients . . . it's punchier. Unfortunately, you're going to have less control, and it can't be used as a peak limiter.
