I was at work today, thinking about how much I would rather be at home working on a new project. Has this happened to you?
Anyway, I got thinking, I wonder what other Home Recer's do for work, you know...when they're not Rec-ing homes. I myself am a carpenter. It's absolutely horrible for the hands but it pays the rent and buys gear, and sometimes I even have enough energy left over from the day to use that gear!
So, what do YOU do?

Also a carpenter,union in a specialty trade..commercial door installation.
Whats a boy to do?

not a fan of off topic threads and who cares :) but you asked so I guess you do......
I'm a web developer/programmer, it's pretty "cooshie" and I'm thankful but I would rather record. :)
cheers

oh ye this one is probably better in the cave

"guitar center salesman!"

Did I hear salesman? For real?? I would love to know some music salesman, so I can get discounts :)

I think this is quite a personal question for some people, but, since I am still in school, I can really careless about giving out my info. I spent a yr being a part-time student, and worked 30+ hrs/week at a fancy japanese sushi resteruant. Besides paying for food and rent, all my money went to recording gears......sigh

I play solo gigs, a weekly duo, an occasional date with a band and I do commercial projects in my studio. I also get royalties from a song I wrote. I also do guitar repair from time to time. Once in a while, I do a studio date as a guitarist.

Other than that, I hang out here or work on music and learning more about recording!

well mannered pimp..

I also unclog toilet bowls.. (plumber) :D

To make a little money on the side, I sell hydroponic.

I also do a little Landscraping when I need extra beans..

Yeah this would probably go better in the Cave or Visitor feedback.. but I guess your more interested in the people who post in the clinic..

cool..

btw - mixmkr, what do you really do? I must admit I am curious..

I'm a headend engineer over a telephony/high speed data/video facility. It WAY pays the bills.

I'm a test/SW engineer in development of all-in-one solution chips for CD/DVD applications.

Pays the bills, and gear, but I don't like it. So I'm quiting and in 3.5 months I'll go studying musictheory. And I'll probably never get such a good paying job again... Oh well...

This month I'm doing some computer stuff at the school. The students have messed the computers up, so I'll have to clean them. You know, delete all the file sharing programs, games, porn videos, pictures, and update some virus scanners and software. I did that last year too. This job doesn't earn me much, but at least I get something out of it. It's just a one month job, then I have some more free time again. Until I get picked (or not) for school, that is.

Electronics technician. I started out in a music store repairing amps and whatever else came in. Then went to stereo/ TVs etc.
Now I work in a hospital repairing biomedical equip. It's a good job, and a pretty interesting place to work.

I also tune pianos in spare time to make money for gear. Only problem is, that leaves no time for recording except the middle of the night when I'm usually too tired.

Twist

I work for a division of a multi-billion dollar international conglomerate. For the first,.. oh... year or so.. I had no idea what my job was really for, or really what my company even did (or sold, or what have you)... But now, after 4 years, I have a full understanding of what I do...

and it's still impossible to explain.. :p

Basically sit at a computer all day (actually a couple computers) and do work with Visual Basic and most Microsoft office apps and some third party data warehousing apps... Data manipulation, Processing, Warehousing,.. blah blah blah... Generating flat files which, in turn, generate pretty charts and sheets which I, in turn, give to really important people... and I also administer a customer web portal... it's a cake job which gives me zero stress and let's me leave every day at 4:30, trouble free, so I can go home and play music. :) (and sit, again, at a computer, all night) :p

back in the old days...I did actually make a crappy living as a musician, studio engineer...and all that stuff I still lust to do, but I prefer making money now!!

My main gig currently is a sailboat rigger, which I have been doing for the last 15 years or so....Nice job actually.

But!!!...I still do the occasionaly paying session out of the homestead now, and make a little bit more than a couple grand a year doing so...Nothing major, but more than pennies. I have the plans all set to build a larger studio at the house (add on), as I could actually do more recording than I do now, but I pretty much turn away drumsets, and large setups, etc... I'd like to get back into that again...but on my own terms now....like picking the gigs!! I've got zero competition, and Nashville is a good two hours away from me.

Interesting posting! As for where this belongs, fuck it.

That being said, I'm an English instructor at a community college. Someone asked me recently what the favorite part of my job was.

I replied, "3 things -- June, July, August."

The 3 months off in the summer are entirely worth the endless nights and weekends grading essays.

g-man

p.s. but seriously, I really do love what I do...and watch those sentence fragments, folks!:D :D :D

My job is close to WATYFs. They call me "Systems Analyst"...

I basically design, develop, and deploy computer systems (some web, some distributed) that are used to support Cancer Research. Everything from hardware configuration to cloning laptops, to data analysis, to talking with end users....
My company contracts to the National Cancer Institute.

It is pretty cool, but not nearly as fun as mixing and recording. ;)

The nice part about it is the spillover from job to hobby, and vice versa. The computer stuff I learn benefits both.

-yes it is a cave thread, but I don't care enough to get all bunched up about it.

hey chris,
speaking of post counts, I was searching around for a post I made, and found a rant of yours that was quite amusing....

something about anyone having a post count over 1500 should get a life...

...sure wish that search index was rebuilt...
