I noticed the same thing about the congas as VHS. I noticed that on the first mix too, but it was overshadowed by the clipping.

I'm not noticing the clipping that I heard yesterday. I am noticing some more subtle distortion in some louder moments of the song. I noticed some crackling around 2:42.

And I still think that everything in the mix is trying to be the center of attention and competing with everything else.

The vocal is nice, but it's got a bit of a harsh midrange to it. Some of the louder/longer notes get a little abrasive.
 
They basically suck, they were put as a guide for someone who played real congas, just a rompler and a pattern. Unfortunately the person I had in mind to play them got this cruise ship gig, and is gone until March. I do think played with finesse the idea of the part would enhance the song....
