Jim Peterik's studio - no dynamics?

I recently visited the home studio of Jim Peterik (the guy that wrote eye of the tiger, I'm a friend of a guy in his current band). The only reason i refer to it as a 'home' studio is because its in his home/mansion. The equipment was better than a lot of the stuff i've seen in top of the line pro studios. he had neumann microphones all over the place (there was a U87 just sitting on the couch...just sitting there) and i saw a really cool ribbon mic (i dont remember the name... the one that looks like a pill...). There were several guitar cabs with large diaphragm condensers on them, a bass amp mic'd with a large diaphragm condenser, then i saw a drumset that was already mic'd. I noticed the small diaphragm overheads, a large diaphragm in the bass drum...a large diaphragm on the snare... a large diaphragm on each mounted tom.. and a large diaphragm on the floor tom. of course i realized that there were no dynamics anywhere... i searched the studio high and low, not a single dynamic. i was tempted to get a 57 and say, 'remember this??'
by the way peterik owns all this stuff but another guy runs the studio, it was him that was showing me around.
is using a large diaphragm on everything common practice in studios today? (at least the ones that can afford it?)
To me this doesnt sound like a very good idea... but what do i know. does anyone else know anything about this?

No, that's not common.

But if the guy who wrote "Eye of the Tiger" does it, maybe everyone will soon.

I guess with the kelloggs royalties he can afford it!

He didn't just write 'eye of the tiger'. He has been writing hits since the '60s and continues to. He was (and is again) in the Ides of March. He wrote 'vehicle'

Go to http://www.jimpeterik.com/ click the history button, you will be surprised at how many songs you know were written by him.

Did you check in a drawer or down the back of the couch that that U87 was sitting on?

Yeah, he's been in the biz for a bit. I have an import CD here with the early Survivor stuff, and it's pretty cool. Got a couple rare tracks on it. I definitely respect the guy as he's written some good stuff (both with Survivor and elsewhere).

Strange about the LDC's....I'd like to hear some stuff done using his setup.

Edit: Looking at his site, it's cool to see he's keeping busy these days!

yea, my friend is Chuck Soumar of the Ides. I just figured eye of the tiger would ge more 'oh yea that guy' reactions than 'the guy from the ides of march'.

i think he prefers to use his dynamics as a cushion bottom mic. blends well with an ldc on top and a royer near the armrest aimed at the back cushions.

Pictures

Is he located in Chicago area? I would love to check out his studio if he is in Chicago. Are there any pictures/ web site for his studio?

I don't think it's that unusuall actually, I think it's really a matter of budget. If I had a bunch of Ela M 251's lying around, damn right you'd see them on O/H's etc :D

I mean if you had a wicked room an mics of these caliber, you'd be crazy not to back off on your mic distances and combine the sonic beauty of the mics/room

Why would he want dynamic mics if he can afford and likes better sounding condensers?

Just because an ELAM 251 is expensive doesn't mean that it will work on everything. You'd be suprised how often a dynamic mic will work better than the most expensive condensor.

yes, he is in the Chicago area. It's in his home though, and i got the impression that it was an unusual thing for him allow someone to just come and check out his studio, he did it for me because of Chuck. I'm pretty sure he doesnt give tours or anything normally. Also, it's his home so i'm not going to post his address or specific location online or anything, since i dont have his permission. There may be pictures online, I wish i'd taken some there to show. I'd check out the Ides of March web page as well as Survivor's webpage, and maybe he has a webpage of his own, i dont know.

No, not because they are expensive - but a great LDC is a very very versatile mic. And ususally sound great on everything from percussion to amplifiers.

It's all a matter of taste. Like an artist who only paints with big brushes -- it's not "wrong", just a bit strange. Still doable though.
