Back in the 60's I was a rep for a hardware company, I was doing cold calls at Milton Keynes and I saw a little workshop and when I put my head around the door there were 4 prototype amps on a bench, it turned out to be Jim Marshall's workshop he had just moved to in order to develop his amps, amazing really when you consider he wasn't a musician...he was a drummer (Tongue in cheek) However, I had no idea what I was looking at was to become a worldwide business...As others have said he listened to other musicians and gave them what they wanted. Bravo for his amazing success.
 
ya' know ...... one thing about Jim Marshall that hasn't really been mentioned much, if any, in this thread.
He didn't design crap.
He didn't really know much about amps and has said so many times in interviews.
He told guys who could do the work what he wanted ..... or rather what guitar players told him they wanted.

All he really was, as far as amps go, was a marketing guy and a guy that told the real designers what he wanted them to design and build. The actual work was not done by him.

So while he was the guiding light and definitely put the Marshall sound out across the world ...... he did nothing like the design and invention work that Les Paul actually did himself.

Not putting down Marshall ...... he's important so relax.
but a lotta people seem to credit him with creating the Marshall sound and he didn't ....... guys working for him did.
 
A guy with the foresight and business sense to choose the right people to achieve his vision and get them all on board is even more rare than the guy that can actually solder the wires together.

It's hard to imagine he could even get that done today.
That he did it at a time when a signature rock sound was in it's infancy is even more amazing.
