which one is better for better sustain, higher output, and a fatter distortion
thanks

I've tried both the JB JRs and the Hot Rails and much preferred the JBs.......

Bruce

I have never tried the JB's but I had hot rails put in all my guitars... I use a lot of distortion sometimes.......(Pantera etc.)

I imagine if Bruce says Jb's are better, they probably are.. I wish I would have asked this question before having hotrails put in all my guitars..:(

Not necessarily... I said *I* preferred them, I didn't say they were "better".... it's pretty subjective (just like monitors!)

Peter - there is no way to answer your question... you really have to try both and see which you like better for your own rig...............

Your question is kinda like asking other people's opinion on what YOUR favorite color should be...............

its gonna be alot of a hassle tho, at my music store, its 30 bux for p up installation, and i dont even have anough for the p up itself..

can someone just give me the strong ppoints of each?

My understanding is that the hot rails would be more of a metal/hard rock kind of pickup. Really high output.

The JB is more a warm midrange humbucker sound. Blues to hardrock.

Neither get overwhelmingly good marks for their clean tone.

Mind you, this is my report based on opinions I've solicited plus listening to SD soundfiles--I'be never used either. I was convinced I'd go for the JB because I was planning to drop it into the bridge position of a strat. I didn't want a major output difference between the bridge and other pups. The strat is still stock.

BTW--Installation is easy if you can solder.

I've got the humbucker JB and the Hot Rails. The JB is still in one of my guitars but the Hot Rails have been long gone.

Jeff Beck: Nice high output pickup with a very sweet overdrive. Not bitey but has a sweet sparse crunch. I don't think its the best for metal but for rock and blues, it's what I like.

Hot Rails: all output but no tone.

There's no choice. Hot Rails are the way to go. Even the Duncan literature will tell you it's the highest output pickup they make. They are not kidding. If you want high output, sustain, harmonics, then get the Hot Rails. You won't be sorry. I've had one at the bridge of my Strat for 15 years or more.

hot rails have too much output. i play metal and hard rock stuff, but at times you need clean.

the great thing about the jb's is that theyre made so that when you roll back your guitars volume knob they clean up really well, but when you crank it it make it really chunky if you add some distortion. theyre really made for playing really loud. ive heard you can get good controlled feedback with them. adam jones of tool uses them and his tone is great. he never turns off his tube distortion. the clean parts are just him rolling back the jb with his volume knob. if thats the way you like to play theyre the only way to go. im buying one soon i hope
