hey, for jazz, what's the type of mic that's most suitable for it. A mic that's clean and neutral in sound, or a mic that adds a warm and dark sound to it?

do you have msn messenger or hotmail for me to send you a clip of my sm58?

Jazz Vocalist mic

Hey Chief!
Get onto the sE Electronics website or any decent mic manufacturer website and get into their "contact us" area.

Start up an e-mail with them and ask them which of their mics would be best for jazz singing and ask them why.

Then take that specific microphones data and compare it to the specs of other mics that appear to be similar, whether they cost more or cost less.

I think you will get some excellent information that will then allow you to take the results and figure this out and nail it down for yourself.

I do this a lot before I buy equipment.

Better yet, go to a Sweetwater type of place and try the mics out if at all possible. OR after checking out the microphone return policy, order 2 or three from a retailer, try them out and return the ones you dont like.

You can learn a lot about mics by perusing the Sweetwater Music website
and reading about the Neumans and Telefunkens and high priced mics.
(Check their comments out on the Studio Projects T3 tube mic)

In know for a fact that the Frank Sinatras and the old jazz baladeers were generally pointed towards mics like the old Neumann M49's which provided big open sound. High priced big open sound that is.

I have read that the Studio Projects T3 is an excellent tube vocal mic for many genres. I highly recommend you check out their website and read the reviews.

Please also consider going to www.tapeop.com and get into their forums.
While you are there I highly recommend you sign up to get their magazine as it can be had FOR FREE. Some heavy duty folks are always providing commentary in the magazine and the forum is pretty cool too.

Nuff Said.

chiefraven, that would totally depend on your budget...which would be?

I'd say it would be a bit more common to go with a mic that's a bit darker with some color, but all it depends. Although in most cases you certainly wouldn't want something that's overly bright.

hey dot

what are some good mics that are darker ? within the $200 range. And how about a decent preamp to go with it to make it a good jazz sound?

The vintage Sony LDCs are also great mics.

hey

thanks for the reply guys... anyone else care to throw in a comment or two?
What are some of the mics that are usually used for jazz vocals? I am thinking of getting one for christmas, as well as a good preamp. Or should i just get one of those kareoke machine and a shitty mic haha :)

I don't think any particular mic will work better or worse for jazz...it's still vocals. Each vocalist will sound better or worse on different mics. Now I'm not sure, and there might likely mics that often get used in jazz, but I would say invest in a good LDC that makes your voice sound better that the other LDC's you've tried do.

I like my AT 4040 and my Rode NTK - the NTK is better on my voice I think...try that one.

I'd recommend a ribbon mic. They have a smooth "vintage" sound with a nice bottom end and no harshness in the upper register. Since it sounds like you are on a pretty tight budget, you might want to look into the ribbon mics made by Nady (RSM-1/RSM-2), Shiny Box, or Oktava. Unfortunately, ribbon mics tend to need a lot of gain from a preamp. I have the Nady RSM-2 and use it with the Studio Projects VTB-1 preamp, which has plenty of clean gain and is only $100.

Scrubs,

How does that Nady Ribbon mic sound? I'm looking for a ribbon mic myself for recording my fiddle. I like the warm, clean sound I hear from ribbons.. like the RCA 77-DX and Coles 4038. Have any test clips of it by any chance?

scrubs is right, beyer is reasonable wes dooley has a killer in the aea r84 and Warren @ front end audio is looking at some se ribbon I think, haven't heard the review yet
Another route might be an RE20, works for Bonnie Raitte

If you are looking at ribbon mics, Royer is also an excellent way to go:)

I posted a clip of my singing here. Jeremy has some nice clips on his mojopie blog, also, vs. the Royer R121. I think the Nady works well for vocals and guitar cabinets (though it lacks the midrange bite of the Royer), as well as various percussion (shaker, etc.). That's about all I've tried it on so far.

Having used that Nady before, I certainly am not going to get rid of my Royer:)

wow scrubs

damn scrubs, nice singing man! I am very impressed! That's from the Nady RSM-2 ribbon mic? So Ribbon mics are definetly pretty good for jazz huh? since they have a smoother and warmer tone?

What about Audio-Technica AT2020? or any of the mics listed in this post?

And how much is this rsm-2 mic? And how nice of a preamp will i need for it?

man i can't wait to get them so i can start practicing some jazz.
Is this all i need to make a decent recording? the mic and the preamp?

also, does anyone know a page with lots of sound samples of different mics?
