James, I need a new sampler, and samples

I been using LSP and the Edirols with Sonar for too long now, I`m tired of the quality of the soundfonts. They are all sounding dingy to me now, like glasses that need cleaning. What`s out there that will shake my tree and give me the crystal clear quality I 'm looking for?
 
I purchased the Kompakt sampler a while back. It is a nice sampler and it did (does) expand my palette, but I find that I still come back to Sound Fonts and the Edirol VSC quite a bit.

Bottom line with this stuff (IMHO) is that there is no holy grail, and more is better. The nice think about Kompakt is that it will play several different formats of samples.

And stop calling me James. :D

Organ! NI B4... and people keep talking about other Native Instrument products...

Free Crystal softsynth (VSTi) here to download...

GigaStudio is good, but their highquality sample CDs are expensive. I used Gigasampler SE, until VSampler3 made it obsolete...

Though I rarely use it, but Sampletank is not bad. You can even download it's free version... did I say, FREE?! :D

Better read KVR-VST rating page...

I just purchased Sonic Synth 2 (8 GB of sound and a sampleplayer). I had Sonic Synt 1 before since the groupbuy on KVR and was very impressed with it (and the included "orchestral strings"). I've been told that part of SS2 will be excellent for autenthic progressive rock with roots in Yes, Genesis, King Crimson and so on. So what could I do - being a proghead since the 70's...

As far as free synths go. Crystal and Synth1 gets a lot of credit. But three you don't hear about that much that I find really excellent are "Rock", "Lallapaloza" and "Unknown."

I have Orchestral, it sounds good but I can hear the LFO oscillator's same wave applied on all strings when using multiples. If they were at odds it would be more realistic sounding. I have B4 and it stands on it`s own ground, always. I love it.
I tried sampletank, it sounds pretty realistic and clean. I may grab some more samples for it and see. If it`s good I`ll buy. Ill check out the others you metioned. Thanks man

As long as the sampler accomodates direct from disc streaming,which allows for larger sample sizes,it's really the sample that makes the biggest difference.

I have Kompakt.I had Gigasampler,then Gigastudio,but they don't play nice with Sonar.

And don't forget, sometime a sample that sounds weak alone, could sound good in mix context :)

Beltrom, the SS2 seems interesting. Have you thought about the Arturia Minimoog or Moog V Modular Softsynths? I too am interested in prog rock stuff, and also fusion stuff, and modern type stuff like Ween and such. We might have similar needs.
 
I dunno, I never used SS2 myself. Some people gave good rate on NI- Pro 53... Anyone used it?

That would be nice. If you see me drifting in the wrong direction feel free to push me in line. ;)

Can't say I have looked much at Arturia. Maybe I should. I gave half a thought on their CS80 and at least was interested enough to read the newsflash on their ARP 2600. But I'm really at a stage where I should stop chasing options and start making music. There are two "softies" I know I would like though. They are NI PRO-53 and Waldorf PPG Wave.

You know, I am just getting into this. The reason I am looking at the Moog stuff is becuase I know I like that. But, I think it's wise to do a little research to make sure you're not missing out on something else. I have not used any product as of yet, but will probably end up with the Arturia MiniMoog software, BFD for Drums, and a midi keyboard.....all to use with Sonar Producer's Edition......this is in addition to me recording my guitar and voice as well.

....oh, this may be a stupid question, but if my computer does NOT have a DVD drive, just a CD ROM and a CD burner drive, can I download all of the data on DVD discs? I'm kind of a newbie, so I have to ask.....peace.

I posted a lil jam in the clinic I used Sampletank on. It`s a pretty good software interface and easy to drive.

I would hang around at KVRAUDIO, make a thourough evaluation on freebies (and different forms of donationware) before putting any money into sofsynths. The ones I've mentioned (PRO53 and PPG) I've tried. I even have a stupid song where I KNOW it's the PRO53 missing, and i can't seem to find a good enough replacement.

On the DVD's I guess we're talking about SS2? I'm really not sure what format it is on the DVD (haven't got it yet, it's on order). A DVD-player (or better yet a burner) is a small investment really - and maybe you should consider getting one if you're putting down money for SS2 anyway?

Btw, if you don't like copy protections (I don't) you should be aware that SS2 needs to be registered.
