King of Bling
Hey guys...I'm sinking to new lows in terms of validity of song-posts. Here's one I got today of my daughter. This was a performance that took place a few months ago, and I REALLY, REALLY wanted to be there, but it didn't work out. :(

My mother-in-law went and recorded it on a digital cam-corder, then to VHS, but she's been holding the freaking tape hostage for some reason until today, when I got to see it for the first time.

So it's an mp3 from a 16bit .wav that was dithered down from 24bits, which came from a VHS tape which was recorded from a handheld mini-cam, operated by my mother-in-law, you KNOW THE SOUND QUALITY KICKS ASS!!!!

Oh yeah...they forgot to turn on her guitar mic, too.

Still, I can't help myself. For your listening whatever:

Wow

Your daughter can SING man.........
Did she write that song?
I don't recognize it.
Quite a performance, she 's not shy to take command
of a stage.

I hope my kids try music at some point.
You are a lucky man.

Dan

I think it needed to be 24bit all the way thru...man it really suffers...
(I just finished typing some lame ass response to bit rates over in some techno forum:( )

Tex...take this reverb and shove it up your ass, you reverb hater you!!!! (that was a joke...K?)

Nice... kinda sounds like Michael Jackson when he was a youngster.., if you close your eyes:eek:

actually on pitch and performed without the sound of "jitters"... quite impressive. She's got some pipes, eh?

damn..Harris...you got me back in my sarcastic mood... and I was doing so good for the last 10 minutes...

5 stars based on the mp3 clinic curve. So...she's 12...that sets the bar pretty high.

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!

Oh,the song.Top Notch performance.I dont care about the camcorder quality, sounds fine to me.I dont listen to music for the sonic quality.....never have never will.I LOVED AM radio back in the day....A+plus 5 Stars.

p.s.that crowd noise has got me jones-in for the live gig again.

Man....we'll get my daughter and your daughter and Al's daughter and have 'The Daughter Band," and sit back and collect the residuals.........I think I see our retirement plan!

Great voice for a 12 year old.....very few cues that she's that young. She's gonna be awesome dad. You know I have the same thing going with mine so from one dad to another......I know exactly how proud and excited you are.

Just keep those damned drummers away from her! :D

.........where's my damned lighter........

.......................I dont need to tell you what i think of your little girls talent man. .....just excellent.

........Who mixed this though? Is that verb the room.........ugh.

She's gonna be a big star some day

Hey guys - thanks for not flaming me (so far).

Heavy - thanks... yeah, I hope you get to share some musical bonding with your kiddos too. Looks like my 2 year old has "it." The 5 year old just doesn't give a rip about music, but he pitches pretty well, lol. The tune is an old folk song that's been done by a lot of people that I've never heard of, and then one that I have (Patty Griffin).

mix - Damn, I wrestled with whether or not to do that .wav conversion from 24 to 16 for hours. :D. Thanks for listening...and stuff. ;)

christian - Yeah, probably too much so for most people, lmao. Anyway, thanks for listening.

guernica - thanks mike; yeah...nothing new here really, I just got all goosepimply when I got it yesterday, and I had to convert it to pure audio anyway...so why not post, lol. And yeah, this is just a cam corder recording...PLEN-T of reverb in that auditorium. I did some light limiting and faded the crowd noise on both ends... I mean, since I didn't write it, or sing it, or record it, lol...I figured it needed to at least pass through my wave editor so I could have SOME reason to post it, lol. Thanks.

1 Tell your mother in law not to cough so much next time. It'll nudge her in the direction of humble. That's good for any mother in law. Especially if she's holding the camcorder next time. And if it wasn't her (well, it *sounded* like her to me...) tell her to smack anyone near her who coughs next time...

2 Tell your daughter to keep singing. Tell her to get better recording facilities as well. She's lovely to listen to. Not only did the coughs not matter, they made it sound more real. Good guitar work too.

3 I really liked this one. There's a truth that this track embodies: performance is more important than the quality of the recording.

Despite all that, and I meant every word of it, there's this interesting thing: we record and mix and try to coax interesting sounds out what we've done so that the listener will be engaged, but I found this dumb shit recording of your daughter really engaging. It sounds real and live, and I was hanging on every note. Go kiss your mom in law. Go on. I dare you.

Thanks, dobro - It's more of a "first impression" kind of thing, I figure... My monster-in-law means well, but she was all ZOOMING in and out throughout the piece, so the video makes you nauseaus, but more importantly, everytime she did that, it added some electric hum noise to the recording...lol.

Yeah, she coughed, lol...and who the fuck is that guy that sounds like he's just DIEING OF SARS?? Sheesus, leave already, lmao.

I worry about me lately...like whenever I see some parent just lose their freaking mind at a T-Ball game when a bad call is made, or their kid's not "being utilized enough," lol...I've always just laughed, but when I saw the tape of this, and saw that her guitar mic was pointed DIRECTLY AT THE FLOOR (notice the sonic rumbling in the track...)... I just about came unglued. I mean, it just would have been nice if this track had had some guitar on it, but that's not it...It's the nazi parent in me coming out - "HEY, IT'S 2 FREAKING MICS...NOT BRAIN SURGERY...YOU MANAGED TO TURN ON THREE OF THEM FOR THAT HORRIBLE "WHO'S ON FIRST" ROUTINE BEFORE THIS!!!!"

yeah, probably best I wasn't there, lol.

Kramer - I didn't respond to you b/c you're not here, lmao. Seriously, I missed it. Thanks a lot...

ROFLMAO - wipes tears from eyes - yeah, I like reading your posts. heeheeheehe

Look, don't sweat it - it's a great take. Kiss the muminlaw, I mean it. Did you hear those girls cheering for the singer? Damn, that was cool.

LOL And if you don't like her mic pointed at the floor, teach her what to do with mics. What's a daddy for, furphuxache? grin

Hmmmmm, I don't seem to be here either.
Good thang I'm not looking to be offended..............:p

Well, you haven't offended anyone for, let's see, maybe 15 minutes? I guess I should take up the torch.

Hey! BUTTPLUG!!! Why didn't you acknowledge me?!.......it's the lawyer in you huh? Acknowledgement implies some sort of reciprocal involvement I guess and a guy like you who.....umm, who........geez, this is boring. What the hell do the flamers get out of that anyway?

I'd rather be praising........pass the tex-mex please.

You know, you're farting around and having a good time, but there's a real possibility in what you say. Not so much a daughter band, as a daughter *song*. I mean, there was Tori Amos and Bjork and Polly Harvey who found themselves on the cover of Q magazine, right?

Okay, does one of the women in question have to write the song, or shall I do it? Well, I mean *anybody* can do it, but *somebody* should...

LMAO - I have no idea, hehehee...I mean, it's not like there were 40 people I had to keep track of.

I even had something to say to you, lol...which is that I would LOVE to work on a family collab kinda' thing, but somebody else has to start it. My idea would be (of course) some kind of simple acoustic arrangement, with the 3 ladies singing... Steve's daughter on "lead," Al's daughter and mine on backups...but when I say backups, I'm really just talking about 2 other parts that are above and below the melody, but that sing throughout the tune... Like when Emmy Lou Harris sings "backups" with Allison Kraus and Nancy Griffith.

I'd gladly write the tune if one of you guys could do the guitars/bass/synthy whatever bed?

That's really quite a good idea. We should definitely do that. I'm ready......I'll make my daighter be ready. :)

BTW......I'm finally trying to do something with Attitude....I'll let you know if I come up with anything.

Hey , I'm ready. And I know Al would be into it. So let's do it. The one thing I've got going is that next week I'm driving up to Al's place to play with his band and duo a little bit.....but I'd be back the next week and could get right on it. I have few gigs the next month or so, so I'm going to be a collaboration machine and try to get caught up. This would be a perfect time.

Okay then...ball's in my court. I'll write a tune. BTW - My idea about having your daughter sing lead is in no way a slam against Al's daughter (or mine) I hope...just a vocal styling/texture thing.

Well, I think it's more like what you said.....there won't really be a lead part.....more like the Dixie Chicks without the Communism. :D

Damn, listen to those screams at the beginning ... At first I thought it was The Beatles or something ... lol

Your daughter is very talented ... reminds me of a Joan Baez or Dar Williams.

Better keep the talent scouts at bay.

haha...just noticed somebody coughed right around the 1:40 mark or so ... helps to keep the live element :D

:)

you know, boyd's right - this girl's got ATTENTION.

Look, has anybody thought of asking one of the talent in question to write the song? I mean it. These young women can *sing*. Okay. They can write too, right? Well, get 'em involved. Think they won't be interested? Think again daddy-o. Look, we might get *3* songs outta this. LOL

Okay: al, steve, chris: can your daughter do harmony? lemme know
