I just got J Station, mostly on the recommendations on this site. I am primarily a keyboard player but I do have and I do play guitar a bit. Some suggestions on settings, uses other than guitar, routing and hook-up options would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Setup depends on your input configuration.S/PDIF is the best way, direct digital injection of the signal that bypasses the AD-DA converters. It goes at 24 bit and the sounds are really pristine this way.Best way to go if you can.If you just have a 16 bit sound card with line in,get an adaptor cord to use both the left and right outs of the j to the stereo line in on your card. This to preserve your stereo ping pong delays and other stereo images. Otherwise for mono just use a patch cord from the left out.
I use the j-edit software on the pc to tweak the settings, which you can then save back to the j.I have a midi pedal to change the patches when I use the j live with my band.Otherwise I never change patches on the fly if I'm using it for recording.
Other than guitar,I have used it on my bass a few times.I consider the effects section of this unit to be outstanding, especially when heard in all its 24 bit glory.

I'd pretty much agree with what Tom said. It all depends on what sound you want. But the presets are pretty damn amazing, and there's software provided which easily lets you tweak settings.

Don't settle for the speaker model that defaults for each amp, experiment. Some of the speaker models seem really compressed and exaggerated to my ears. I like the tweed 1x12, it seems more dynamic and realistic/neutral to me. I have also noticed how much different this thing can sound thru various headphones, and hi-fi amplification systems, a patch that sounds lifeless or bass heavy ( or exaggerated) in one context, may sound great in another...It does sound surprisingly good when recorded and played back on my computer's SB.

Also, if you haven't done so yet I would update the firmware to version 2.0, Johnson has added 6 new amp and 7 cabinet models; one of my favorites is the new '65 Bassman with the tweed 1x12

You're right Major Tom, the 65 Bassman Rocks, but I like it with the Blonde 2x12 cab. I happen to own a 64 Bassman and I can tell you that Johnson nailed it!

Yeah, what Tom said.

If you're not using J-Edit and recording via S/PDIF, you're wasting your time. That's where the J-Station really shines.

One more thing - For your S/PDIF hookup, be sure to use a high-quality shielded video cable, not some RCA audio cable. When people complain of noise, it's almost always attributable to using the wrong cable.

hey since you have a johnson, can you tell me how it works live? Or how it sounds cranked?

Can you get a foot pedal for it?

Thanks in advance.

I have no clue what to buy for amp (+processor if not modeling) to get a nice setup. Budget upto about 900

There is a patch library on the Johnson forum with 235 patches. They have an 80k .zip file with all of them.
Go HERE

There's also the User Forums over there.

Cheers, Andrés

Dammit Bongolation, you've got me wantin' to buy a new sound card with the s/pdif input. Does anyone know of any reasonably-priced stereo (amatuer recording) WindowsXP-compatible soundcards with the digital input? This thing has got to sound way better without the extra D/A A/D conversion process.

Well, I hope you have a pc cause the J-edit software is useless on a Mac right now. Makes you use OMS, which I hate, being a Freemidi fan. J-edit froze my Mac every time. However, if somebody can enlighten me to how correct my problems, I'll retract my opinion! :D

crawdad: I can't even make it recognize the JStation, it always says Device Not Found, or something like that. Did you have the same problem?

There's a guy who told how to upload the user patches found in the forum, editing them with Hexedit and Sysex, go HERE. I tried it with an old sequencer with Sysex and didn't work. I have to try it with Sysex yet.

cordura21--I never even got that far. The "beta" version kept freezing my Mac. I just gave up for now in hopes that they figure out how to fix the bugs. In contrast, the Pod software worked just fine. Seems like any kind of Mac support is dwindling in the world of music and recording though. If there is any it is an afterthought, like the beta J-edit for Mac. Its been beta for quite a while and I wonder if they will even bother finishing it.

Yeah, I was afraid of that...

Got a Mac, was wondering if the software was going to be compatable. Guess not quite thoug I am not sure that Mac support is dwindling but, sadly, it might be. Maybe it is time to add a PC to the set up and have both. Anyay, if anybody comes acrss a way to get the J-Station edit software to work with a Mac, please post.
