I've had it up to here... HERE! with my snare drum

What are you expecting to hear?

If you're expecting your snare to sound like one of your favorite CD's, then I can tell you that you're wasting your time if you expect the acoustic sound to be comparable. From what I see of the pics you should have about the snariest snare sound a snare has ever snared.

Get the drum to sound like a God Damn DRUM! You should tune it to where there is no ring, and you should hear the crack of the top head and the snap of the bottom. You should also near some of the wood. Beyond that, if you're expecting something else, then you're expecting something you won't find.

This thread is reminding me that if there was one thing, ...JUST ONE GODDAMN THING that I could leave ALL drummers with before I die, is that what a drum sounds like in a room with you sitting behind the kit vs. what the recording system hears and records ARE TWO SEPARATE FUCKING THINGS!!!!! (Sorry to seem angry... I'm not... just trying to get my point across)

EVERYBODY!.. Try this once...

Tune the drum where it sounds dry, piercing and sharp. No muffling. Put a mic on it and record it. What you end up with sounds completely different than how it sounds in the room, doesn't it? The drum could have a shit load of ring, but that's not necessarily what the recording hears, does it?

Open and loud is what you want. Play with the tuning, but don't get over involved with believing that you have to have a perfect CD sound before you record! It won't work!

Dude, he had the wrong head on the bottom. It's NEARLY impossible to make a snare sound like a snare with a 10 mil head on the resonant side.

And when are you going to be out this way? I need a real drummer to stop by and help me with a few things.
 
Everyone's dead on about the snare side head :-) Get the 3mil head and you'll be golden.

re: 42 strand snares - I heart them. I have them on my Supra and that drums just sings.

If you can find Ludwig snare side heads, snag 'em. for some reason, to ME, they seem to hold high tension a lot better than Remo Ambassador snare sides. My rule of thumb has always been to crank the snare side head until it screamed for mercy, then just give it one more crank :-)

Whoa Whoa man, I know. I know that already. I had the wrong head on the bottom i wasn't talking about anything being recorded. I'm well aware that drums sound different from every inch you move around the drum, where your standing, sitting, laying, dancing, shitting, etc. I just couldn't get anything close to a snare sound. So I found I should research more before I go on a ordering spree. But when I start tuning up my drums for recording you will be the first man I will consult, because I've heard your drum sounds and they are great.
