I've got an itch to buy new mic please help

I was looking at the RODE and SP stuff. I really think I like the SP TB1. It will be used for female vox and some male. I want to stay under $300.00. My pres are Soundcraft and Jomeek 3Q

Audition the Shure KSM32... if it works for you it could justify spending the extra money.

I like the TB1 quite a bit too.
Did you try it out yet?

It's pretty neutral, without strong coloration.

Would probably ditch the 3000B along with the SM58 (you already have a '57).
The you could also consider something like the SP T3 with the extra $$.

How about the CAD VSM? It seems to have some good reviews. Is it much better than the C179

Deep should you choose to add a CAD, www.frontendaudio.com sells them too. Warren is a very nice guy to contact and is a "regular" here
(like Alan Hyatt at SP)

I've only tried the SP's and regard them highly, not the CAD's so far.

Thanks for the link. I like how they have the Freq response for the mics. Makes it easy to see how the mic behaves.

The frequency graph won't tell you directly how a microphone responds to transients though. So two microphones with identical graphs, by different
manufacturers respectively, can still sound significantly different!

So go by the ear rather than the eye.

A mic that I like that isn't talked too much about around here is the Oktava MK319. I don't know if GC still carries them, but it's pretty damn good for 100 bucks or whatever they're going for today.

GC couldn't get Oktavas for a while, but they got a recent shipment. You can find them at the larger GC's for $99. I agree that the MK319 is one of the most unique mics sonically in it's price range. The good ones are darker than most, smooth as hell, and more than worth the money. Particularly good on singers of the female persuasion.-Richie

Well, you're right. I guess I was sleepy last night. That looks like a nice deal - $300 for a pair. Have you ever dealt with this guy before?

Listen to "Ode to Joy", that is one CAD M179 overhead (no eq) and an ATM25 (slight presence boost) in the kick for drums.

Listen to "Overhead Drum", that is one CAD M179 in cardioid pattern through 4 different mic preamps (t'was a test).

It works well on many vocals, like all mics it's not a cure all although I've got a few mics in my personal collection that always work at least well on vocals. The M179 is one of those mics that never sucks at anything IMO.

M9 is a tube-y sounding mic with a somewhat softer midrange than the M179 and is not as open on the top end as the M179 (although the M9 isn't "dark"). The M179 would definitely be considered more "neutral" than the M9 (warm-ish color). As they say...different crayons in the box and all that.
