...the software I had saved on my PC won't work with it.

I'm downloading (legally before you ask) a program ending in .ISO now I'm pretty sure with a bit of fiddling that this should install just fine?

I would ideally like Cubase 5 as that's what I have worked with before.

I'm just trying to get my head around the differences between Windows and Mac OSX.

Yes. You will want to burn the .iso to a DVD/CD depending on the size of the file. You use Disk Utility for that. Its in the Utilities Folder within the Applications folder.
