I'm still searching for the best simple analog to digital solution.
I'm not looking to spend much money, as I'm not looking for some big hifi sound, though I want something very listenable.

Ok, before I spend a small amount on a semi-good a/d converter, Id like to clear up this VCR method Ive heard of.

I understand the how/why of it pretty much.
Could I use a VCR as an A/D converter?
As in, going thru it into a soundcard, does it do the same as a lower grade a/d converter?

Maybe this is a good idea; maybe I'm so embarassingly clueless.

I'm sure someone will have some worthy feedback to offer...
Thanks again-I ask to many questions...

HiFi VCRs do NOT record audio digitally - they use a form of FM modulation. So, no, you could not use a VCR as an A/D converter.

Years ago, when digital technology was just starting, a digital converter could be added on to some Sony VCRs to record digitally, but compared to today's converters it was pretty primitive.

So, basically, to answer your question - yes, there's no "probably" about it - you ARE wrong! ;)

damn, i misread/misunderstood it. oh well, back to the drawing board.

are you looking to do PC recording?...if so im sure your computer came with a soundcard that has a decent enough AD converter for what you want......if not, you cant get a really decent one for under $50 ......SB Live.....EnsoniqPCI.....

I could do that, and semi-wish I could. But I live in a dorm, and I cant record here (or won't) Im toting an 4 & 8 track analogs for now it seems. Ive got a soundblaster, and "have" recording software.
Though, my brother let me borrow a laptop, (he's a deals, steals, and refurb type) it's got the power to record, but Im not sure with trying to get a better soundcard...and I already have these analog units, which Im trying to analog pride, but even analog guys hate cassettes. So eventually Ill upgrade somehow, but right now funds are low, but there's always credit cards...
thanks for the suggestion, im just not sold to the idea yet.

You would be better off using the laptop instead of the analogue 4-track (even though the laptop has a slow HD, it is still better a better option than the tape recorder you are using  ).

Spin.........

Ive seen your posts abuot laptops before; would you go out on a limb and suggest a budget USB model?

Is the Roland UA-3 about as efficient (cheap) as they get?

It would solve future problems if I got straight into digital now, but I lack in funds--though this laptop 'borrowed' will save me a small fortune if I do go that route.

Prolly willy, willy wong. Don't know what the hell I'm talking about, but had to throw that in there.

Just as an aside...

...what is with the use of the word "prolly"???? Is it too much fuckin' trouble to type "probably" - I mean, it's only 2 extra letters.

Don't feel bad jacobdetoth, Blue Bear's from Canada, their on the metric alphabet!!!!!!!!!

....note on 'prolly' word usage.....

fyi: 'prolly' is more of a contraction of accent. As many people do actually say 'prolly' here (dropping the b sound altogether); I just use it online as a friendly alternate.
