Spread the Daf!
I've been so busy with playing and working and all the collabs; I haven't been doing any recording of my own at all. So for some reason this song popped into my head tonight and I got a urge to do it and put it up no matter how late I have to stay up or how bad it sounds. So here it is.....it's an old tune by Randy Newman called Let's Burn Down the Cornfield. I spent about 6 hours altogether doing this from start to finish and I'm too sleepy to know if the mix sucks but I'm gonna put it up anyway.
The bass and guitars are though my J-station and the acoustic is a Norman. The drums are my keyboard.

I gotta get up and go to work in a few hours and I'm gonna regret this tomorrow......oh well.

NOTICE NOTICE NOTICE!!!!!
The damn 3rd bass drum kick is out of time! I'm positive it was right when I did it! :D I'll go fix it (hopefully ) this weekend.....the rest of the beginning is right unless the gremlins come back.

wow, no need to D/L this..the stream sounded cleaner than most MP3's i've downloaded. Man you gotta real nice "blues" voice really great! I've never heard that tune before, but i'm sure you did it justice...probably smoked it!;) . Bass gtr had a nice tone. Didn't care for the lead tone so much, but played very well. Nice fade. Thanks!

the beginning sounds out of time, but that's surely coz I don't know the song:D :D ...and of course, that's how the song goes, isn't it??:D :D
Vocals are great, you got a really good voice....I like the bass sound as well....the guitar solo could be a bit louder, but maybe that's what you went for....overall, considering you are sleepy and tired...GREAT WORK....

Excellent. What else can I say. Randy Newman is a hell of a song writer. You have a great voice my friend.

Big Voice ! What's the signal chain for that ? I like the bass too. What kinda Bass you got ? are they stainless steel strings ? Sounds like some clipping coming through in places. And the whole song does sound kinda sleepy ... in a cool way. Can you make the piano more honky tonk ? Just a few thoughts ... pritty good for 6 hours work. 6.2MB MP3 ... therefore that about 1MB per hour :) I take my hat off to ya... no way I could go all night like that... I turn into a pumkin at 11:00.

Lt., you freak, this is good. I know your collab thing with folks is fun, but you need to do more on your own. And like David mentioned, very clean recording. Love the guitar. I'm gonna listen later, louder, when everyone is out of bed. I thought I heard a "uke" in there somewhere. he he he he he he he he
Great tune. Thanks for posting it. Now get some sleep.

what a great voice.. very authentic.. You should be singing more! Nice guitar bits too.. good bass sound.. very cool..

the very beginning sounded a little off, but maybe that's how it is.. I heard something before the guitar came in, like a noise.. Is this the same guy who sang that song "I love L.A.?"

You should be singing more.. It seems your voice is as good as your sax..

very cool el Tee, keep em' comin!

your the real deal hollyfield! :D

Hey Man,
......Im gonna check this out when i get home tonight.....

.bump for now........

Yeah, that damn third bass drum kick is freakin' out of time. Now how the hell did that happen? I swear it was where I wanted it when I first did the drums. Hmmmmmmmmm.....I'll have to fool with my cut and paste function and see if I can fix it. I wonder if this is my first experience with a 'puter glitch 'cause when I did the drums it was still only about 9:00 and I was awake so I can't figure how it got shifted......crap!

Thanks for the comments everyone. Was the voice too loud? I got to where I couldn't tell........I'll probably give it a good listen before I go to play tonight and then give it a remix.
I agree about the lead guitar tone.....I'll have to do that over with either one of my other modelers or a real amp. I'd like a cleaner sound for that but everything I tried with the J-station lacked sustain unless I dirtied it up.
Dres....the chain on the vox is....(drumroll please) my trusty NT-1 into my Mackie board. That's it. I have a Yamaha SPX-90 (?) I used for 'verb and the drums are through a Quadraverb.
The bass is a Peavy piece of junk. I've actually ordered a new 5-string from Schector but it hasn't come in yet.

Well.....................looks like I've set myself up with some work this weekend.....this might could sound good with a little work.

dtb....you're right, I need to start doing this a lot 'cause I love it!
Sam......I'm gonna get your tunes up tonight, I promise.
Roker.....you get the timing awareness award..........................dammit! :D
David and track rat.....thanks man.

like everyone has said so far, the voice sounds great........good guitar solo........the bass has a really nice tone........the drums actually sound pretty good for a keyboard or whatever it was you said you used

the way it worked in from just the drums was interesting and kinda builds an anticipation..........nice work.

Wow

Really clean sound.
A fine job for a nights work!
Is the Bass panned a little to one side? I am hearing it but I can't be sure. Everything comes through and has a crisp sound.
Nice chops. The tone is nice and the grit works fine. I don't know what you were after but it sounds cool

Will wait for the next version.
Vox are superb!

Hey Lt. Overall, I thought it sounded very good. Your voice sounded great and the recording of it was very clear and present in a good way. Dug the bass sound myself. Didn't like the verb on the kick drum. I'd prefer to hear you mic up your amp for the solo guitar. Of course, I'm partial to real amps. Modelers always seem to end up sounding like--well--modelers. I thought the acoustic sounded good though.

I dig Randy Newman and forgot all about this song! Its good to see you doing some recording again. Nice work!

Whoa...

Lt. Bob - It's funny how you kinda' picture people "physically" on the internet that you've never met. See I had you pictured as this little spindly guy, maybe 5'6", with a very small voice who just practiced the saxophone a lot.

Holy Hell...that's not you AT ALL. Your voice is amazing. I play the guitar some, and what exactly is wrong with that tone??? I mean, I know I'm just a lowly hillbilly and all, but I knows what I like.

Christ, you sound like you could do one helluva' Christmas cover of "You're A Mean One, Mr. Grinch." Please don't take offense to that...it's a totally killer voice. Just not at all what I expected.

From your reference to tuning the drums, I'm assuming you're playing real drums. I fucking hate you.

(don't clean up that lead, please. Dirt forever).

Anyway, I shouldn't be surprised anymore by what people on here can do, but I find myself constantly amazed.

Nice freakin' work, wondercow.

Oh man, you could have got the Boogie Man's role in "A Nightmare Before Christmas" with that voice. Very cool stuff indeed. Great vocals after 3:45! The tone of the guitar doesn't exactly bother me, but I'd like to hear it with a few other options. The mix is pretty nice...spacious but full. It breathes. I haven't heard the original, but this version is terrific. Again, fantastic voice that we should be hearing more of. You got a lotta soul man...I love it!

I'll say here as well that Lt. Bob is a gift to the board.

Thanks for the fresh music.

singing ominously.............

..............you're a mean one, Mr Grinch..................:D

and SLuiCe...............
Thank you guys so much. Maybe I won't recut the vocals after all...... :)
The beginning being out of time is bugging the crap out of me so I took the rest of the day off to fix it. Only thing is, I was so sleepy last night that I didn't save the drum line ( no Chris; it was my Roland XP-60 not real drums ). So it may be that the only way to fix it is to cut off part of the beginning. I hope not 'cause I like the long buildup but we'll see.
I'm also gonna recut the guitar ride. I like dirt too but it doesn't seem to fit to me.
I hear ya' on the 'verb Crawdad; but I like it so it's staying. There's a certain atmosphere I hear in my mind and it needs to be in a barrel. But you do get the guitar redone so you're 1 for 2......50% isn't bad. :D
OK.....I'm off to work on it 'till I can't stay awake anymore. Taaa..

Things sound really good from my point of view. Like some of the others, what really stuck out was your voice quality and that smooth bass thang. Some pretty good guitar solo work at 2:20 - 2:50 or so.

I heard some distortion in a couple of spots - e.g., 1:58-2:00.

Good job.

OK.....we're on the second mix now. I fixed that timing thing at the beginning and I changed the ride. It's a cleaner guitar (sorry Chris :D ) and I think it goes better with this song. Also I bumped up some of the rhythm instruments in the mix a bit. I think it's a better mix than the first one....what do ya'll think?

That's what i'm talkin bout

Hey Lt. man that tone is the *one*! Yeah! Lot's better...that sounded like a real amp there. Like the way you played it this time much better too. Uh, I'm listening on phones and was hearing some kinda high pitch feedback in the back ground..guess it was just the stream, i know you would of heard that. Way better mix man.

I agree with 1/2 of what he said. I like stupid amounts of distortion and big criminally long delays with no decay, but the new lead tone is totally appropriate in this intance.. you got pretty decent sustain for a clean tone. The lead is good, but the voice is still just numbingly good ("the highlight") and not what I expected.

Lt.,

excellent playing, recording, singing, etc. etc etc.......i didnt hear the original, but what im listening to rocks and is IMHO, the final version......
