from my limited experience I'd say it's your room that you should focus on.
if you want to take more of the room sound out and you have $300 to spend, buy an sm7b. I'm so amazed by that mic. I have a small room and it took the thin sound away in a dramatic fashion. condensers will pick up your room sound and everything else within 2 miles.
treat your room with either GIK panels or make your own. but that's the recipe that worked for me: sm7 and Gik
