Hello, I am extremely new to the whole mixing scene and I have scoured the internet searching for this 1 particular answer. This may be the dumbest question ever asked but here I go. I'd like to know what device is used to add a different rhythm to a song and how would I go about doing so. Even if it is to read a hefty site, I'd do so. The reason I asked was that i've heard mixed cds which have a specific song on another songs beat. I'd like to know how to do it as well. Hope someone can help me out with little criticism as this is the newbie section. Thank you again for your time.

Thats pretty bad

Greetings,

I guess its not so bad man, cause a few months ago I was like, your mean there are professional soundcards?? (If that isn't funny to you, its ok, you got time to learn)

I would imagine you are talking about samples?
Short sections of beats (A few bars) that are repeated and repeated (looped) while stuff is played over.

I think you mean like the beats behind rap songs and stuff, and more recently techo/dance stuff.

There are softwear packages that let you record short segments of songs (say a few seconds) precisely trim it to a perfect length (so it maches up to repeat seamlessly, kinda like when you put wallpaper up the edges have to match). After you have this sample, the program plays it over and over in the background while you put your new song on top.

Ok, that was just a guess at what is going on, I think most audio program can do that (read around here), but there are probobly some specific programs. You might want to search some techno/electronic resources for people who sample songs on their computer.

Well thanks for such brief response. I thought it would have been unanswered. I kinda get what you are saying but what I am saying is take for example a song (original), you then change the original rhythm with one from another song. If this is what you were explaining then sorry (still have some reading to do). I have heard it done many times and was interested as some beats sound better on other songs.
P.S thanks for not flaming me I really expected it :)

This is a pretty complicated process, and it depends really what you mean when you say 'rhythm'. Alot of things make the rhythm of a song, but if you just mean the drums/percussion (possibly bass also) then this is virtually impossible to do unless you have the original separate tracks of the song. Unless...you take a short part of the original song that has all the instruments but the beat has cut out, and loop THAT...then...get another short section of another song with JUST the drums playing, loop that...and try and make the two fit. I use fruity loops 3, beatslicer, and Cool Edit Pro.

This only works for some songs.

It is possible to get just the backbeat of certain songs off of the singles. This is popular with techno/dance groups( ie. prodigy) they will release a CD single of one song, and on that single they will have the "real" version, then maybe a remix, and then a track that is just the back beat, you could look into findin some CD samples like that.

Thank you all for repsonding. I get the idea now and will try to do a little as it seems like a very complicated issue so i'll just read up some more and try to figure it completely out.
