Isolation boxes?

My band is about to go into a studio to record a little 5 or 6 song EP. The guy running the place has these "isolation boxes" to record the bass and the guitar and I was wondering if any of you guys knew anything about them. We would all play in one live room and this is supposed to reduce the bleeding(duh). The only thing is my guitarist has a nice rig, a marshall JCM 900 and the matching cab and we aren't sure if these boxes will sound as good as his cab....any advice??

Don't worry about it. The studio you go to knows that if you sound bad there you won't be coming back. They want you to sound good almost as much as you want to sound good. Think of it as a great time to learn some new tricks and keep an open mind.

Thanks for the advice man, we heard some of the stuff the guy recorded and it sounded good, but we just had never seen these boxes before. There aren't a lot if studios to choose from here in College Station but this guy has a nice setup and we think he'll do a good job.

It all depends on the cab. I would expect that a studio would have some pretty good ones.

It's all about the sound of the room, but no one can agree on what a good sounding room is. A great amp in a bad room will sound bad. So, everybody wants to make it as dead as they can and then add the room sound later with reverb so you have more options. Reverb sounds better if it's after the speakers anyway.

I was in a pro studio once and the engener put me and the other guitar player in the same room with some baffles between us and he put the bass, drums and keyboards in another room. Then did the vocals last in a little vocal booth. Doing it this way it's easy to mix, you don't have the sound of the drums or bass in the guitar track.
