Is this possible?

Hello all Fostex VF-160 users

I would like to ask you some questions regarding this unit as I am interested in it.

First of all how are the mic pres in this unit? Is the sound quality good?

Also I would like to learn how the ADAT out put thing will work with my PC. Let's say I have a RME hammerfall card with ADAT in-outs. I connect the VF-160 with the RME card using the ADAT line. I read on their website that I can use the Fostex as a mixer connected to my PC. So in essence all I need to record to my PC directly is the Fostex, mics, a soundcard with ADAT, and the software. Is this actually true and has anyone tried it?

I can't vouche for the VF160, but the FD8 can do that. But there are some things that aren't as adventagious as recording to the VF160 and just transfering your tracks to the PC. Latency and monitoring being the main issues. But it does work great if you do most of the mixing/editing on the PC and might need to add a quick track or a punch-in and don't want to record to the VF160 just for a tiny part or 1 track. The RME is a killer card. Wish I could afford one. But there are plenyty of ADAT cards out there and for a lot less if you're willing to go used. Anywho...

I ve managed to come up with more questions.

If i use it as a mixer are the faders motorized or do I have to control them manually?
Also is it possible to record live to the PC using the VF160?

Thanks for the replies so far and any kind of reply would be much appreciated

the faders are not motorized. The vm200 digital mixer faders are.. i have one and love it using it as my PC DAW controller. Also, the VF160 won't control what's on the PC screen. I believe you can send MMC commands via a MIDI cable, but I don't believe you can do any automating on the PC side via the VF160. A sequencer can send certain MIDI messages/commands to the VF160 though.

You can record live to the PC using the VF160. That's what I was talking about in my initial post.

It's true and I'm doing it all the time. I have the terratec EWS88D card in my computers and it's a good card for the price ($200) and has everything you need to integrate the VF to computer. I'm using the word integrate instead of connect on purpose here because you can do much more with this combo than you could with any other computer-multitracker combo that don't have the adat interface. Search for my other posts on this subject.

Thx for all the replies people.

I have one more question.
How are the Pre amps on this unit?
Are they better than Mackies? Soundcraft?
