Pleads the 5th...
OK. I've been looking for some constructive critisism (actually even some wise-ass remarks would probably be humbly welcomed at this point - C'mon Gidge, give me your worst, my skin is toughening up, and if I can't take it, we'll just have to lock horns in the cave) on two tracks I posted. So far, only a couple of responses have come back, which BTW were greatly appreciated. I've been milling around the recording techniques forum getting info on how to get better drum tracks (because I already know they suck) The song titled "Love Me 'till Labor Day" was an attempt at TOTAL COMMERCIAL POP FLOSS, which I realize probably doesn't appeal to a lot of you out there (I've been keeping an eye on the ABBA sucks, Britney suck, etc. posts as well). The song titled "Thing of You" was a true artistic attempt (I stress the word attempt). I'm waiting for approval on MP3.com, and uploading better(?) mixes while I'm waiting. (If songs aren't approved before I upload newer versions, does that put me back on the bottom of the MP3.com inbox?) I've got some ideas on changes that need to be done, but I want to see if I'm on the same page as others out there, who haven't heard the songs a million times. Anyway Check them out and GIVE ME SOME SH#T!

Thanx, Tom.

Listening to Thinking of You...I think too much verb on the vocals...you already know about the drums (they arent that bad, ive heard worse, but lots of room to do better).....you might wanna stop that lead guitar at the begining when the vocals come in or pan it really hard and push it back, it distracts from the vocal...id just leave it out...other parts of the song has the guitar clashing with the vocal, like under the chorus, but the line HAS to be in the song, so it needs to be panned some....pull the ride (or is it a hihat) to one side and pan the guitar to the other.....Overall, I liked it......

Ok, Im headed for Labor Day....the mix is good....the bubble gum is way too sweet, and I love bubble gum.....ill leave it at that....

Just one more note on Thinking Of You....this is opinion only....the line "can u visualize me resting in your arms..."...its my opinion that lyrics in a song should be conversation type words....would you actually use the word "visualize" while professing your love to her....Id say "can your sweet eyes see me..." or "can you feel my big dick deep inside your twat..."....again, opinion only.....

BTW, ive just listened to Thinking of You for about the 10th time....nice song.....

Thanx, Gidge. I'll try the suggestions on the mix. As far as whether I'd use the word "visualize" in that situation... ..I probably would. You know, trying to impress some dipshit groupie with big words (and a whole bunch of shots) so I could get into her pants. Now, if I consider using the truly romantic line of " can you feel my big, etc., etc...", how should it be sung, and with what equipment? With feeling, vibrato, vibrator, jelly... and should I pick up one of those 10" ribbed omni-diltronic battery operated diaphragm mics for the job? Thanx, Tom. I'll keep you posted on my progress.

Id go with the 10"...stay away from used,pre-owned, or display units.....

Again, I really like this song...what equipment are you recording with?...

Equipment? Basically, whole bunch of shit that I've accumulated over the years situated in a not-so-studio environmental setting.

As follows: Mackie 1202-VLZ, AT4050/CM5, ART Tube MP, Alesis Quadraverb, MicroVerb III, M-EQ 230, 3630 Compressor, Pawnshop B.C. Rich (among others) and Korg A-5 processer, Korg NS5R, Ensoniq EPS, Cakewalk, QSC MX1500a, JBL/URIE ES600, JBL Control 1s, JBL G-734s. Jose Cuervo 1800. *Please note that the list is not necessarily in order of importance. All recording, mixing, and masturba... I mean mastering is done on a PC. Should I be able to get some "real" sound out of this stuff if I keep at it, or have I pretty much maxed out on the sound quality I can expect to achieve? Oh yeah, I almost forgot, I'm gonna be picking up that 10" dildoramic podulator tomorrow so I can get started on that new vocal line.

Hey thats a pretty decent gear list...yours is bigger than mine(i dont get to say THAT often)...

what sound card are you using?....

(sorry for all the questions?)

Soundcard is a SoundBlaster Live in a computer I just put together soley for music / internet. 800MHZ Pentium, ASUS P3B-F ATX motherboard, 256K Ram, 60 Gig Maxtor 7200rpm hard drive (turns low 9's in the quarter mile), HP CDR, and a real shitty monitor that makes my guitars do really bad things (I have to keep them separated). I keep looking at all the interface stuff that's on the market... ..8 in's and out's, and all that shit, but I seem to be having some kind of brain fart when it comes to understanding that shit, and whether it will be compatible with the rest of my stuff. Cakewalk, most importantly. Gidge, I've noticed you've given advise on soundcard configuration in other forums (problems with more than one soundcard in a computer and so on...) What's up with that? Are multiple soundcards / multiple in-outs useful, and why? What about hard disk recorders (maybe to keep that podulator busy when I'm not using it)? If this is something that will help me, especially on the mixing/mastering end, I'm all ears! Thanx, Tom

One reason for having more than one card is the reason I have...My card (Delta Audiophile) has no onboard Midi so whenever I have the need for it (rarely) it is available to me....as for multiple inputs, its either because a)you are recording more than one source at a time, such as drums, or vocals and guitars together...of course you could go thru a submixer and record into Soundblaster but then you dont have control over individual tracks...or b) you are too lazy to unplug your guitar and plug in the mic.....as far as harddisk recorders, Ill assume you mean stand-alone units...there are alot of good ones, but they dont have the upgrade capabilities of a PC DAW.....I would say the weakest link in you chain is the Soundblaster card....everything else you have is killer....You could step up to a Delta Audiophile for $149 or a Delta 44 for $220 and the notice would be substantial.....But Im not hear to spend anyones money and in fact, hate it when others do it....

https://homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23934

as far as compatability, most cards would be with that system...that motherboard and processor work great with digital audio.....ifs its just you recording, i dont see a need for 8ins/outs...a stereo in out card like the Audiophile would be fine.....

OK, I did some checking around today. I got a hard-on for a Delta 66. It all (well, most of it) make sense now. I couldn't, for the life of me, figure out why - when I would send MIDI stuff out of my sound module (digital, right?), into my computer via the SoundBlaster, the quality of the sound took a nose dive. Here I thought the SB was the best thing since sliced bread. The card does have it's uses among consumer applications, though. I wouldn't go out and get a Delta, etc., if I was just playing games on the computer. The SB works OK for that. Looks like the two front fenders for my Mercedes project car are gonna have to drop down a step on my priority list! Thanx for the help. I'll let you know how I make out. BTW, where's the cheapest place on the net to pick one up (I'm looking around myself, but I'll take direction from anyone whose up on this as well)

8th street has the Delta44 for $239

Bayview Pro Audio has the Delta66 for 299

Mars has the Omni Studio for 399 which is a Delta 66 with an Omni I/O unit...pretty cool...but you have a Mackie so this probably isnt necessary....

Keep in mind that the only thing that the Delta 66 has that the Delta 44 doesnt is S/PDIF input/output...if you have no need for it , the 44 is exactly the same...
