Hey guys,

So I want to get into home recording. I was thinking I would get Reaper DAW, a focusright scarlett 2i2 audio interface, the free version of amplitube 3, and EZ drummer 2. Is this enough to get started? I have guitars, amps and a bass. I also have a friends sm57.

thanks for any help!

It's enough to begin with.............assuming your PC can handle a decent load. Reaper is not CPU intensive...........but it will still be affected by a substandard PC. So....what do you have for computing power?? You also don't mention any specific type of recording you intend to do. What's your plan?

Personally I would go for the Steinberg UR22 in place of the 2i2, it is just as good, cheaper, has MIDI and comes with Cubase. Reaper is fine.

I doubt the computer will be an issue, anything capable of running Win 7 or later should have enough grunt for a few tracks, it is when you load up multiple instances of FX plugins in real time that the troube starts.
That said, it is as well to prepare! Turn off Windows noises, those irritating bleeps and bloops amd disable any wireless/Bluetooth services. Some say disable anti virus software and keep off the net but I have never had a problem. I just run Ms SE.

Dave.

Yea, won't go into the MIDI cause of ECC ;), but Reaper requires almost no CPU regardless of tracks. The VST's on the other hand will. If you handle your computers resources correctly, you can get by with a lower end computer, just be aware that you may have limits.

For now, if your computer seems to struggle, use the often overlooked Reaper feature (hey, that rhymes, at least the way I say it) is Freeze Track. But it looks like a good starter set. Your biggest hurdle now will be how to use what you have. It isn't as simple as many people believe.

Thanks for the input! Far as my computer goes I'm using a 2012 macbook pro with 4gb of memory. My plan is to use it to record and organize my ideas/songs and maybe use it for youtube stuff if I ever go down that route.

Video is a whole different subject. Spec your computer for video, audio will be just fine.
