is this a decent mic set up for drums? personally i'm not sure on the 58's, will they do the job?

The sm58's aren't ideal, but they will do the job. I've recorded with worse. Sm57's or Audix i5's are the better option. That setup could still track some pretty bad ass recordings as long as you mix correctly. I don't even use a mic for the hi-hat, but to each his/her own.

The highs might be hurt a little by the design of the SM58...but it should be as close to what an SM57 will sound like in that use.

If you havent bought everything yet, you may consider that in a Tape Op shootout the AT4041 SDCs got better ratings than the Neumanns...and more often certain engineers are using shure KSM32s as overheads...and those are useful in other areas.

Tom...give it a shot. May just turn out great. ;)

What I'd do is ditch the 58 on HH, and ditch the room mic and try it with just the 4 mic setup maybe in the Glyn Johns or Recorderman techniques. OH placement is the main mics you'll want to make sure of placement but I don't see why ya couldn't get a great sound that way.

As to the room mic, if you have a good sounding room, go for it. :)
As to the hi hat mic, you'll probably get a lot of hi hat just from your OH's.

my thoughts anyway...
