.... rounds off the attack of a note? sort of like using a volume pedal or volume knob when doing volume swells... but automatically. my pinky isn't fast enough to do fast volume swells and faster pasages and my attempt with a volume pedal was fruitless.
 
my Line6 POD has a delay/swell effect that does just that with a delay too...
Also, using a volume pedal is probably the best way to do fast volume sweels IMHO...
 
You can get that effect with a noise gate, but you have a lot more freedom with a volume pedel. Or, when I won't that sound I just hammer the string and roll the knob on the guitar. It sounds trippy when you play that lick from Close Encounters.

yeah, that's how I do it now, but I'm trying to do some pretty speedy violin passages and I can't hammer every note hard enough. especially across strings. then throw in rolling the knob fast enough... it sounds like shit in other words.
 
Ok...BOSS Slow Gear used to do that, but they were discontinued...
I bought an AKAI Shred O Matic with volume pedal...only for distortion though. If not, any volume pedal should do the trick...
