Sorry for this ignorant question, but...

Are there any good sites or resources to learn about looping and what software to use for it? I'm unclear to what it even really is and what some examples of it would be?... I've got Sonar, and i guess it has some looping capabilities and I'm just trying to figure out why I'd want to use it and what it sounds like?

Again, please excuse my ignorance :)

The most commonly-used software for this purpose is probably ACID from Sonic Foundry. They have a couple of ACID tutorials at

http://www.sonicfoundry.com/tutorials/default.asp

I suspect they are step-by-step how-to's for ACID specifically, but perhaps you can glean something interesting from it.

They have a site called ACID Planet where you can upload pieces done with ACID, and others can hear them -- there are thousands of examples there you can listen to and get an idea.

Meanwhile Cakewalk is starting to sell some Loops for SONAR CD-ROMs so I suspect they will have some more information soon, maybe some SONAR-specific tutorials that would be more useful to you.

Like AlChuck said, most people would use Acid to create their loops.

I normally make my loops in Sound Forge, then send them to Acid.

You might be able to find some info at this site...

If you are still questioning what "looping" is all about, then post us back, so we can walk you through it the concept.

After you do your reading, if you still have questions or are uncertain about looping, then post us back :) . And we will walk you through it, step by step. :D

I read the links. Now, I have a few questions...

I'm familiar with sequencing. Why would you use a program like Acid as opposed to a sequencing program?...Is this a tool made primarily for remixing?...

Cause its EZ

One big reason to use Acid is it's so easy. Preview a sound, drag it over to the upper left window, paint a few measures into the right window with the paint brush, and there you go. Instant loops. I can put together a song in about 5 minutes with Acid that sounds like most Dance radio crap you hear. I've played with tons of other software, and this is about as simple and intuitive as it gets.

You should also play around with Fruity Loops, which takes a little more time to learn but also has a few cool tricks up its sleeves.

I have been using acid pro 2.0 for about 6 months now and it is one of the best music creation programs invented. You can use the Acid loop libraries,as well as make your own.and makig your own is the most fun. I have no experience with sonar, but I would srongly suggest trying the demo of acid,it's a better trip ! :D
