Is the Beta 58 worth the extra 60 bucks or so over the 58?
Also I have been told that the 58 is very responsive to bass the closer the sound source is to the mic. Is this also true of the Beta 58?

If you're looking for a mic in that price range, compare a beta 58 to an Audix OM5. You'll be surprised.

The beta 58 is brighter and has a slightly higher output than the standard SM-58, so if you want a brighter version of the SM-58, spend the extra money... it all depends on your voice and what you want, sound-wise.

The bass response increases the closer you get to any directional mic including the SM-58 and the Beta58.

Is it worth the extra money? If your having problems with feedback durning live shows or rehersals then yes it is. Its not really a recording mic, its mainly designed for live use along with the normal SM-58.

For recording I would go with the SM-57 for general purpose stuff and someother large condensor for vocals.

as a live mic? yes, it kicks.

as a recording mic, i suspect an sm-57 will be more usefull then either.

I thought that the 57 and 58 were the same mic, just with different screens???

nope, 57 in uni-directional, much more useful in recording
58 is omni, doesn' t work out too well in studio
