Is the ADAT dead? Alesis' new HD24......

Has anyone else been looking at this HD recorder yet? The technical (or really any) details are slim so far but I'm surprised that there isn't any talk of this piece of equipment on the boards yet. I remember the excitement as the ADAT's initially rolled off the line and how much of a stir they created. I can't imagine the ADAT hanging on for long as a viable piece of gear when 8 tracks at 20 bit resolution (the LX20?) will cost you, if you get a deal, $950. That's RCA in's, no bells and whistles like the XT20. The HD24 offers 24 balanced TRS ins and outs, 3 banks of ADAT lightpipe ins/outs, 24 bit/96kHz resolution and an Alesis LRC remote to boot. It has 2 hot swappable IDE drive bays (one 10 Gb drive included). I have seen these drives priced at $200/60Gb. All for $1995. Plus the web site says "all necessary hardware and connectors included." Do I hear taps.....?

In fact, mine died last week...I just shipped it off to Alesis for repair,

heh heh...had to tell you that after I saw the subject line of the post...

Once it gets back from warranty repair, I'll be looking to unload it and it's older brother on anyone looking for good ADAT deals

Too bad rue! Here in NYC we have an Alesis-authorized specialist that I have been dealing with for the past 3 1/2 years that I get my capstans,rollers and heads cleaned for FREE!!!!
I also get repairs done for a small nominal fee no matter what kind of damage has occurred to my ADATS.(just as long they have not been dropped off a tall building).
ADATS Rule!!!!!!! (In least in my recording book!)

Next time my adat goes down can we send it to your man, I had to go to middletown, 300.00 and I dont even
know what they did.
 
Here in Mpls, I think everyone who did warranty repair work quit because Alesis wouldn't pay what their repair rates were, so I'm shipping it back.

The thing took a major nose dive into the crapper. Two major errors in the RAM (CAL Brac and CAL PG) - and I saw my head hours display go from 90 to 2822 to 9999 in one day!!!!

I've taken my LX20s in on two occaisions and felt that their service was more than fair (<$100 each time and the job completed within 3 days). They are good guys that own the place, too. I suppose the price depends on the damage ... but I really felt like I DIDN'T get screwed.

As far as the format dying, I really don't think so. As long as there are VCRs, there will be an ADAT medium to record onto. Even if Alesis discontinues the machines ... there's so many on the used market that I doubt that it'll dry up anytime soon. Now, when DVD truely overtakes S-VHS as the home-video format of choice, then maybe we'll have a problem getting the tapes at a good price. But as long as you can get 42min tapes for under $12 (under $10 at some places), the format will have loyal followers like me. :)

That's really creepy - This place is about four blocks from where I'm currently working... (I see me and Big Kahuna are in the same city) - I'm just further in the Londonberry/Bren Road complex. Maybe I'll take my other unit there to get cleaned

If I find out what happened, I'll notify you all. I shipped it out yesterday, so I don't know what the problem is yet, but something points to a RAM corruption or something, cause those numbers have to be stored somewhere. My other dirty secret was this unit was a refurbished one, so I don't know what that did to it. Attempts to reset the PG and BRAC were unsuccessful after a couple of hours.

haha ... that's funny because if I look out my window at work, I can see their front door ... I'm in the Opus II building on Bren Rd. It's a small world, after all. :D
 
A bit on the HD24 - they thought that would be their saving grace, they've been working on it for a long time, and were hoping to be first on the market with such a product (so they could sell it at a good profit margin. like they did with the ADAT).
Bad luck. both Tascam and Mackie beat them to it, while the HD24 isn't anywhere near ready to ship.

The masterlink is a brilliant piece of gear, I love it!
 
but it'll help drive prices down

I've considered going Tascam, or Mackie (probably not Alesis) - but I think now I'll wait till the Alesis one is released. That'll drive prices down a few hundred on the other two models.
