Is my set up going to work?

Hello and thank you for reading my post.

I have a condenser microphone (Mxl Genesis FET)
Hooked up to a mixer (Alto ZMX 122 Fx)
Through a Berhinger UCA202 digital audio converter to my laptop which is a pretty decent laptop with reasonable specs.

Here are my biggest issues.
1.) I am attempting to record over instrumentals and when I do it also records the beat with the vocals in the same audio track.

2.) I am unsure if Adobe auditions is the right program for me.

3.) I know little about how to use the mixer appropriately and I am unsure if everything is hooked up correctly.

I am very desperate to get this all up and running and would like any knowledge you may have to give. I can supply pictures of everything if needed.

Thank you for your time!

Rather than the mixer and that Behr gizmo, you should have bought an audio interface with phantom power for the mic. Don't know how you have things set up now, but chances are you can't monitor though the mixer AND send the mic from it to the Behr at the same time without also re-recording the tracks you're listening to.

I'd recommend an audient iD14 interface to replace the mixer and behringer, that's the kind of thing you need, then all you need is the mic, interface and software, I think it would be a lot simpler.

This mixer has built in phantom power and I can hear it monitor through the headphones input and I can even record while listening to the instrumental through the input. My sole problem now is how to get it to not record the beat with my vocals as I would like my vocals to be their own separate tracks. I do not know how I can bypass using the behr (no matter the mixer or preamp I use) because my computer does not have direct line in.

What he's saying is that you should really get a normal interface. Something with maybe 4-in/4-out so you can actually route things where you need them instead of them being summed in a mixer.

That said, there *might* be some way of doing something similar with your existing rig. But somewhere, that particular output signal is being routed back to the armed track.

How does this item do anything different than what my current mixer can do? Other than being a simpler option that is. I am willing to put the time in to learn and I enjoy all the on board effects I could have with this mixer.

Would you mind explaining how I would route them with the interface? What do you mean by summed in a mixer?

I wanted to have options for later use. It seems like it should be simpler. I also have a dual 1/4 in TS to Dual RCA cable if there is a way to use that instead.

- Do you have it hooked up like the diagram below or do you have the OUTPUT of the UCA202 going back into the mixer? If going back to the mixer, you likely will be mixing vocal and beats on the second pass.
- Are you're headphones plugged into the UCA202 or the mixer. Should be in the UCA-202 to work with the diagram hookup.
- Do the beats and vocals have their own separate tracks. Are you creating a new track for the vocal and not somehow overdubbing in the same track?

Interface as mentioned above would have been simpler.

Yes I have the output of the uca202 going to the input aux of the mixer. The aux output on the mixer is going to the input of the uca202. Headphones are in the mixer yes. I will fix that. The beats are pre-made as I purchase them so they are on their own track. When I record it rerecords a lesser quality version of the beat with my vocals and I think that is what you meant. I am leaning more and more to pick up an interface as recommended. However is it possible to still make use of the mixer with the interface?

Yes, you need to remove the UCA202 outputs to the aux in on the mixer. Take the UCA202 output to a headphone amp or monitor speakers. The mixer does not have the option to put that aux in to the headphones only (along with your mic input). That's what an audio interface WOULD be able to do.
