I got a firewire interface today and even trying to record one track with it it 'cracks' or 'pops' every 2 seconds or so however there was no audible latency. BTW you probably guessed i dont know lots about computers.
My HD is 160 GB 7200 rpm + 10GB slave
I have an adaptec firewire card in the PC
My firewire interface (phonic helix board) deffinatly works as i tried it with another PC and recording 2 tracks was fine.

Now.. my proccessor and motherboard... its a HP Brio motherboard :o and the processor is a pentium celeron 334Mhz piece of crap.

Before i go out and buy another one i just want to make sure that changing the motherboard and processor will stop this and if you have any reccomendations please tell me as im on a very small budget. Thanks :D

well for how slow your processor is, yeah it's your motherboard. But other then that, try upping your buffer sizes of your hardware & software, and also for the clipping, lower your input level a little bit. That might solve your problems there.

Thanks but there is no clipping what so ever. i repeated exactly the same thing using another computer and it was fine. Im not sure of the specs of that PC though. guess i have to buy another motherboard and processor. Im fucked. i have no money and need monitors.

That's a hard decision I would say. Monitors will let you mix a whole lot better (up to the point of what you can do), but cpu & processor will let you breathe easier, and let you mix faster etc. I would get a cpu & processor first, in my own opinion. I would say anything under 2ghz is slow, but my god your wayyyyy under there.

Well, tell us what your budget is. What is the absolute most money you would spend on a motherboard, RAM, and a processor?

You could Upgrade your Motherboard and CPU to something arround 2.5GHZ+ for about $75 and do the Upgrade your self....

about 6 months ago I upgraded my moms PC to a 3.06ghz CPU with a New Motherboard and 512mb of DDR ram for $99 canadian....

Look on TigerDirect or ebay and you will find a good deal on a CPU/Motherboard Combo....

Cheers

Thanks alot for your replys but i have sorted it out. Instead of having a DAW just for music im going to use the PC (one im on now) for it instead. I have been putting computers together, inserting chips etc.. for ages now and i thik im just going to use the 'family' PC. Its pretty good the specs are below, please mention if i need to improve anything:

3.4e Ghz Intel pentium 4 processor 1Mb cache
TriGem computers motherboard (built in firewire, LAN, USB 2 etc..)
ATI Radeon 9550 256Mb (I think thats graphics card) X8
512Mb DDR memory
250Gb SATA harddrive (7200 rpm)

Cheers

I'd probably double the RAM, but other then that, it looks better than mine :)
