Is my MXL V67 a dud?

I recently bought a mxl v67, mainly because of the rave reviews I read here on this board. I got to say that after using it for a while, I'm not real happy with it. I've used it on 2 different (male) vocalists, through my JoeMeek, through my mixing board, & straight to tape(disk), all with the same result: The mids are just not there & I get a lot of sibilance. I understand the sibilance might be related to mic placement, but I've tried a few different placements. As far as the mids go, my vocal tracks just seem kind of thin. Even boosting the mids with eq doesn't seem to help. Do I have a bad mic, a bad ear, or bad technique?

Hmm... I'd take it to the store you bought it in, and ask to compare it with another one. It's not supposed to sound like this...

The v67 could really benefit from a good bass rolloff switch.

A lot of what you hear is probably the v67's over-active proximity effect. I'd try cutting some of that bass out of there, and use a de-esser. That should bring a lot of the mids out and help it sit better in the mix.

Could be a dud, though. It happens. Or maybe it's not the mic for you. I'm not a huge fan of the v67 myself.
