is my m88tg screwed up

just got an m88tg.

great sound. great top end. love it for voice. mmm... ssses sound like a distant waterfall, not like white noise crap. nice bass. i sound like god.

but anyway, the handling noise! the handling noise! is mine screwed up? it has so much handling noise that you cant touch the mic cord when you use it. way more handling noise than any other "hand held" dynamic i own. way more than a 57 way more than my 441.

should i send it to beyer?
or is this normal operation?
 
eel, I think there's something wrong with it.
You might try making sure it's "snug" in the XLR connection.
Sounds silly, except I've had that happen on other microphones.
I'll try my M88TG tonight (handheld) and let you know how it sounds.
Love mine too BTW.

P.S. Do you still have that RE15?
I might be interested in buying it.
 
nope, i sold the re15.


by the way i sold it to justify my purchase of the beyer.

of course they are totally different mics, but you know... i have so many, and i cant stop buying them! so i felt i had to sell something. (my girlfriend: "you bought ANOTHER mic. how many do you NEED?")

great mic though. i'll miss it. got good results with it on snare and vocals. great for vocals you want to sit back in the mix (background vocals and stuff like that) and sound nice and smooth... like a less peaky 57.

for a great deal on a great mic check out music go round right now. they have an re38 for $199.

i spent the whole day wondering if i should get it... but i gave up. it is an re20 with proximity effect and some built in eq curves. it looks amazing and they go for like $250+ on ebay. so it is a total no brainer purchase.

i am telling everyone about it, cause otherwise i will buy it!

yea, me too. an re16 i used to own (can you tell i buy and sell a lot of mics?) had this problem. it had certain cords it liked and certain cords that never worked right with it, cause they couldnt get that full XLR lockdown.

ill open the thing up tonight and see if i can adjust the plug inside, maybe it got pushed in too far? i dunno. gotta love opening up mics and seeing what is inside.
 
Whoever landed that RE15 should be very glad to get it.

I just scored two RE16's for $37 each (including shipping)
on e-bay.
They look OLD, but sound first rate.
Took the (ancient) foam out of one of them to "make" a RE15.

Thanks for the heads up on the RE38, however, I prefer the
variable-D design of a RE16 (RE15), and RE20 when given
a choice.

Good luck on finding the cause, and after I get a chance, will
let you know how quiet (or not!) my 88TG is.

OK, i tried to crack open my m88, and damn... that thing is a tuff nut!

it broke one of my fine walgreens jewler's screw driver. then i gave up before i stripped it...

anyway, i dont think it is the XLR jack, it seems to be sitting fine in there. oh and i compared the handling noise to some other mics and determined it has about as much as my oktava 319. (although it doesnt have that terrible bell quality.)

anyone ever send anything to beyer? are they as nice as shure?
 
Tried my M88TG handheld and it works like a champ (quiet).
Just called Beyer once regarding a non-M88 matter and they
were fine over the phone. Haven't sent anything in though.
I suspect your microphone may have been dropped and that
loosened the insides.

Elton, David Bowie, Phil Collins, and many other singers have used the
M88 onstage, so you can bet they demanded a quiet handheld microphone!

eeldip, I hope you get this in time.

Learned recently you can get the "classic" version of the M88 basket from Beyer. Some pro's think it sounds a bit more
transparent for vocals. You may want to ask about it.
Was wondering if they're easy to self-swap.

Then you can keep the TG basket for live gigs, and the classic
one for the studio. Just a thought if it's going in anyway...

when i got my TG i felt a bit less manly, cause the consensus seems to favor the classic.

now i can become a big man! with a modded mic!

Sure thing!

When I spoke with a Beyer service tech, he said the TG works better
than the classic for LOUD singers who are sibilant and/or prone to "popping"
a vocal microphone. Being mildy sibilant, moderately a "popper",
and certainly loud, I fit that profile well...
