All I have to say is this:

Name ONE other guitar player who can fill out a song with just drums and bass like Edge can. Come on. Just one.

I'd argue that no one else out there has ever had the ability to generate rhythm, lead, and pad sounds simultaneously like Edge does.

I beg to differ...the one the only EVH! The master of said simul-rhythm-lead. The best examples of that are on their very old stuff...Women & Children First, Diver Down...

I'll bet you could yank him from U2 and he'd be a seriously lost puppy in any other band that did anything remotely different from his 'thing'.

So what? Isn't that the whole purpose of being in a band?

that goes for about every famous guitarist.

The Edge may not be the world's flashiest guitarist, but he's definitely a very good band player and has come up with loads of great riffs, as far as his use of Echo pedals goes, apparently he started using one because he was looking for a way to fill out U2's sound and ended up building his sound around it, his first Echo pedal was in fact an analogue one too, a Deluxe Memory Man. I read a great comment about his approach to music recently too, someone asked him if there were any rules for making great music and he said, 'There's only one, does it blow your mind or not?'

The only thing that slightly annoys me about The Edge and his style is that it is now quite hard to use a guitar with an Echo pedal without being accused of 'ripping U2 off'

I always find it amusing how many people put down guys like Kurt Cobain or The Edge or Neil Young because they can't play guitar like Satriani or Vai, as if the world would be a better place if those three had only spent their time learning to play 32nd note sweep arpeggios at 200 bpm.

The Edge uses his guitar to create music that resonates with far more people that either Vai or Satriani, or any other "shredder", is capable of. Maybe the Edge can "shred" and he chooses not to, or maybe he just doesn't have the chops for that. The bottom line is - who the hell cares? He's very good at what he does. If you need to hear more "gymnastics" from a guitar player, there are places to get that. Most of the reast of the world doesn't want to hear it though.

The Edge is pretty decent. He has a timeless sound and playing style.

Wow,
This thread asked for opinions - supported by reasons. I gave mine & someone drop negative points on me.
Anonymously of course.
Whoever you are/were why not actually argue your point instead of being pointless & cravenly anonymous.
Cheers anyway

PS what tricks do I employ in an attempt to isolate the "phantom"?
By the way, what's wrong with reviving a thread - they have lives of their own, if there's no interest they fade away if there's interest NEWER people might actually have an opportunity to offer something.
I don't look at the date - I lokk at the topic.

I've seen him live recently. He;s better in creativity than being highly skilled. I will say he's good even without the delay effect. It's kinda like Tom Morello. He's not a technical player but can innovate some cool guitar techniques. I feel like I am that type of player. But I do have all the respect in the world for skilled axeman like Ace Frealy, EVH, and so on.

I love just about everything on "WAR"!Drowning man is just awesome!

My wife and I just saw them on the Vertigo tour and I was impressed with his live playing. Like him or not (which is all subjective so if you do, fine-if you don't, fine) it was pretty good. As far as their songs, well I like them. Millions of people for about 30 years likes them, does that mean they're good? Actually, yes, it does. The best? Probably not but there's not a lot of acts I'll actually spend money to see, and U2 is one I will.

And spare me the diatribes on the genius of Curt Cobain. He wrote a few good songs, shot smack in his veins, couldn't deal with the overwhelming sense of self-pity he had and ate some buckshot. Real genius there. Give me a break. Moron.

for any U2 fans I apologise

I absolutely can't stand the guys playing, his overuse of the same effect & indeed more or less the same notes is enough to drive an elephant mad

Even when he uses a different guitar it sounds the same, it completely baffles me why he has got the status he has in the world of guitar

BTW Bill Bailey did a wicked Edge impression

& I wonder of his ol' man was called Cliff or Precipice (I thinks that how it's spelled anyway)

AMPS & MICS & 10 TRILLION DELAYS & zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

....after reading this entire post, and having my own opinion in the beginning, nothing has changed for me. I will say this.

1) he has his own style (anyone who writes their own music probably has their own style)...and please let's leave Brian May and Pete Townsend out of this!!!
2) there are lots of bands that emulate U2, and quite frankly do it better (whoever said achtung baby was their last good album was right...it's been all downhill since) Coldplay, Travis, and my favorite Super Furry Animals, along with countless other neo-british bands.
3) just because he has 30 AC30's and 2 giant racks of effects, doesn't mean he knows how to use them...there's probably 2 guys backstage dealing with all his effects, and for that matter they probably pick which 6 amps he uses each night for his tone.
4) this is a recording forum right? did anyone ever think of the fact that there is someone behind an SSL or a Neve somewhere making his guitar sound beautiful....besides the fact that he has a ton of money to spend on expensive, probably useless gear.

well that's my input for the day...and please don't put Brian May, Pete Townsend, and The Edge in the same paragraph ever again...the God's of Rock will butt-rape you at night for that. :D

I hated Edge in the '80s for all the same reasons listed above. Now I realize he's a brilliant guitarist. Sure, you could do the same thing with a digital delay--but you didn't, he did. Edge understands tension and resolution; these are musical concepts. Wanking is not.

That's why I give him his props. He did it. And it fits U2's style and sound perfectly. It's simple, yet complex sounding all at once. Unique, yet replicable. But he's the one who did it. Gotta give him props for doing what he does so well.

I'm reading this, and I'm thinking of the "New Year's Day" segment on "Red Rocks", where Edge is seated at the side of the stage alternating between playing a Yamaha CP70 piano and the lap-steel which is resting on top of the piano. All of this with his black Strat on his lap, ready for him to stand up and finish teh song ou front with Bongo and adding some harmonies aswell.

Nah. It's not wrong to like The Edge, but who can account for jealousy?

I like this thread because it separates the WANKERS from the MUSICIANS.

Here are some definitions to help you understand what I mean.

WANKERS - Those who think music is about scales, chords, complexity, speed, physical ability, effects, technical ability, technology.

MUSICIANS - Those who think music is about emotion, creativity, movement, passion, interpretation, communication.
