i have not been using one for the time i have been recording my own tracks (the main reason is becasue my room is not big enough)
after the summer though i am moving into a much bigger room and then plan on building one...

is there such a diffrence that not having one now, would make or break a track?
i dont see how it could though
i just need some explaination in how sound works i suppose in an enclosed environment verses a more open one

thanks all

peace

if you do it decently a vocal booth will never "make or break" a track. It's all in how good you are...

I sit the case of Macle vs. The Homerecording BBS. uhh..yeah. hehe

But, seriously, listen to Macles stuff. He and his GF record their vocals right in the middle of a bedroom, with junk all around....and they have some of the best vocals I've heard from homerecers period.

So much of it is technique and performance...

Macles tracks are not "broken" becuase of no vocal room, I can assure you.

Like anything in recording it depends on the room, the mics, technique, etc.

My recording area is a single room 12'x18" which does have some "harsh reflections" - while this doesn't affect the majority of what I record (mostly MIDI work, including e-drums and direct guitar recording via POD & J Station) I feel the room sound does compromise the vocal (and some other accoustic instruments) I record.

So I created a small "vocal booth" by hanging some old window draperies on drapery rods (floor to ceiling) to create a 4'x4' area. I can slide the draperies open or closed on all four sides if I need some room sound or keep them closed for a very dry sound.

If you feel your room is compromising your vocals, try hanging sound absorbing materials. However, if you feel your vocals sound acceptable - don't worry about a lack of a "vocal booth".

I don't use a vocal booth when doing vocals and I always get pretty good results. When I track loud screamy vocals I can hear the vocals bounce off the walls a bit, but usually it sounds cool so I leave it.

No vocal booth for me, but I have Auralex foam hung on my basement walls, so it's pretty dead. Except for my LOUD PC's Power Supply Fan, I think my vocals (and ac. guitar) tracks come out fine.

If the room at the present time is the sound you want then do it , but I reccomend some treatment in the corners and on the wall, cieling, and floors.:)
