I have a couple of older recordings of a live band, done well before I got any real gear, and way before I learned anything about tracking and mixing at this web site. I think I already know the answer to this question, but I'll ask anyway:

I recorded the live band with one microphone set in the middle of the band into a 4 track minidisk recorder. Things are obviously less than clean, and I'm just wondering if there are any general techniques that someone would use to try and clean up the recordings? My guess is that they're screwed, and the only way to really get a better recording out of it, is to do it again. (That's no longer an option, as the band has since broken up.) I'm just wanting to see if I can get anything out of it.

Like I said, with one mic, there's nothing for me to balance, really, or bring up front, or push to the back, so I think I'm screwed. Is that a good assesment of my situation, or is there some way to clean up audio like this?

Thanks,

What's the main problem with the recording? Maybe a little EQ can help? If there are major problems like not being able to hear vocals or bass you can't really do much.

The main problem is that it's a sucky recording. lol

It's definitely my own fault, for sure. But, I hadn't had my new gear, and hadn't even discovered that sites like this one exist yet, so I wasn't using any real knowledgeable techniques or anything.

Screwed is what I guess I am. ;) I can live with it, I wasn't really expecting that anything could be done.

I just love the song, and it was everybody's favorite, so it would have been nice to have a live version of it done by the band.

I plan on recording a studio version of it myself anyway once I get some musicians to help me. I just want to have a decent live version too.

Thanks, guys.
