Yeah, after I logged off after the last post I thought about that, and realized that you're right and that I was wrong about that part of it. I'd still not recommend an anemic preamp for such mics for the other reasons though.

And frankly, none of this stuff we covered in this thread worries me that much either. It's all good basic knowledge to have, which is why we're talking about it; but IME either a certain preamp is going to sound really good with a certain mic or it isn't going to be anything special, and that's something that as far as I can tell can't entirely be enumerated or predicted by the simple specs and tests we've covered here.

I suspect the problems with his reviews are that he does not spend enough time with a particular piece of gear, and jumps to some conclusions that are simply wrong. As an example, I found his review of the Fender Super Champ XD. Most of what he says is accurate, but there is this one mistake:

"The digital effects include a virbratone, chorus, tremolo, delay, and reverb. The effects sound great but they aren’t adjustable. ..."

Not all parameters are adjustable- as an example tremolo speed is set at one of three different speeds (which he mentions), but the level of the effects are adjustable- you can dial the intensity of the tremolo from none to full. This level is mentioned, but minimized. I find the amp's effects to be quite usable with only that level adjustment.

I suspect that the reviewer(s) just don't spend enough time with any one product to be more knowledgable about them.
