Is it just me, or is this a fun tune?

starts out kinda like "Come Together" then takes a detour into the 70's Love Boat soundtrack music, then in comes the rap. The guitar in the background sounds like "Me and Julio down by the schoolyard" by Paul Simon. I like the singer and yes it is a fun tune. Kinda reminds me of 1976 when I used to listen to the transistor radio under my pillow because I was supposed to be asleep, but I wanted to hear the top 5 most requested tunes of the night. And our number 1 most requested tune of the night is....:p

Holy fullness,

I loved the texture of the tune. Pleasantly busy for all the right reasons. Smooth recording and a top notch arrangment!! Got my idea gland flowing.

Theron.

Hey King,
Would that have been the KC Kasem(sp?) top 100 countdown? I tried so hard to stay awake for number 1!!;)

Definitely a laid-back groove. Fresh, original sounds. I like the bass guitar tones; and, yes, the song has a lot to like about it...

Man,this is recorded and mixed really well.I can only hope I'll find this full of a mix in my tunes. The tune is pretty groovey too.I have some friends that play in a college jam band and they cut loose on these types of jams all the time with free flowing rhythm and funkin Bass with mixed Vocals/Rap.Cool combo.Did you engineer this song?

same here dude!Ive always wanted to write a song that captured that feeling of being a kid and so consumed with music on the radio.I lived with a radio by my side in 1976(I was *covers mouth and mumbles* 11 years old).I can associate certain songs I hear from that time period with what was going on in my head at the time.Good times.....LOL

chessrock,

that is definitely a fresh tune.

I prefer the recording quality to the song though.

I must say, with the exception of the singing vocal which sounds blurry, this mix sounds very nice. I love that its big while retaining clarity. THe width and balance are also impressive.

Funk on!

I think the recording is excellent. The groove is rock solid too. I like the tune and you are right--it is fun.

How about the drums? Real or samples? If they are all real, I'm in deep homerecording trouble!

I did notice that the right channel peaks at 6db hotter than the left. Check that out.

The mix was perfect to me. All it needs is some triple tube exciters and a run through six Tube MP's per side to give it that crispy, yet painfully harsh gloss of vintageness. NAH!! I'm just jiving about that cause I'm still laughing about that post of yours!

Great job!

Cool production, Chess. I wouldn't mind hearing a little deeper kick and a tighter, punchier bass. You could probably get away with a little less vocal processing. But overall very cool, you should be proud.

Thanks for the comments, all.

The vocals and guitars I wasn't actually involved in the tracking of (client did them on his own). And the vocs, unfortunately, were kind of a disaster to begin with -- were recorded with a really harsh-sounding later model NT1 in a very bad room (sounded like he was doing it in a bathroom or something), although the rap section was recorded REALLY WELL, I thought. Same with the guitar tracks, although the performance was so good, I probably wouldn't mess with it.

Crawdad, you are my dali-lama of recording technique. I owe my tripple tube / three-stage tube emulation to exciter technique to you. ;) Hey, thanks for pointing out the Right-channel / Left channel difference. That kind of stuff really helps. And thanks for the compliment on the drum sound. I just got done with my drum room and this is my first time tracking in there. Of course it doesn't hurt working with a kick-ass drummer. Just point the mics and have him go at it. :) I need to do something about the crash, though. It gets out of hand in a few sections, I think.

Tex, thanks for the input. My next job is to convince him to re-track the main vocal tracks with me. I LOVE the bass guitar sound, so I should play around with getting that tighter with the kick.

Funky dude. I dig it. Love the tremolo on the keys. Too cool for school.

The only thing that jumped at me was the symbals are to loud and the ride at the end could stant to come down IMHO

there also some high pitched sound at 4:09 and latter I don't know if it was ment to be there

great sound

cheers

Excellent recording!

Sounded a bit like Jamiraqui at first to me.

Ya, this is a very rich sounding tune. Nice work!

Chess, just 3 words.

WAY FUCKING COOL!!!!

Brothers Johnson all the way man, Freaking excelent!!!

Chessrock--you are my drum GOD!

The 6db level thing was user error here. A cord on my mixer got a little loose in the input jack, so its my mistake--not yours.

Keep that exciter in the rack, dude and rock on! :D

The drums did sound great, excellent job on that. The bass playing is awesome but it just gets lost a little. On a dance tune you need to feel that kick and bass.

That makes sense about the vocals. I though you were doing some kind of weird room reverb on it. Considering you didn't track a lot of the stuff you did a great job with the final mix.

Really excellent mix.. I agree aboot the cymbals being the tiniest bit "up-front" (only at certain points)...

the only thing for me that detracted from the overall "quality" of the recording was the vocal effect... not to sound harsh, but it gave the song a "cheap" sound. Other than that, the mix sounded totally pro-quality,... but when that vocal came in it gave it that "I did this at home" sound. :D

lol... I hope that didn't come out wrong... :p Your mixing is amazing,.. something I'll prolly never attain to... but I gotta be honest aboot what my ears tell me... :p

P.S. I love how the bass sounds when it slaps (around 3:00).

WATYF

LOL.. whoops... I just scrolled up and noticed that you already commented on all that stuff... ok.. just forget I said anything... :D

Good groove! This song had my toes tapping! And the rap seemed to flow and fit right in! Good job!

The only feedback I would have would be the vocal quality. It does kind of sound like it was recorded in the bathroom, and seems to not fit as well with the rest of the mix (imo) ... however, I think the song makes up for that.

The bass is great!

Excellent mix!

It's not just you....this is a way cool tune! I like this a lot. Who played the bass? And what was the chain on the bass. I need that bass sound.
I don't have much to say about the recording.....very professional sounding. Yes the voice is a bit dinky sounding but with everything else sounding so good....it kind of carries the vocal sound with it. I would like to know a bit more about the chain on the drums too. that's a very good drum sound.
