is it just me, or is Cakewalk (Pro Audio 9) one of the buggiest damn s**** you have ever seen?

i've had problems with it ever since i got it.. aside from being quite over-complicated (i think), it seems extremely buggy.. it's always randomly doing things - like just a minute ago, i clicked Solo for one track, and somehow it magically put another track on Solo, with me only clicking one track.. but even worse, somehow, right now, every time i try to add a part to a song - i'm working with MIDI - somehow, after working in Cakewalk for a minute, things start to get pretty crazy.. somehow the Keys of some of the tracks get offset or something, and it ends up playing wrong notes.. i'll compare two tracks that have the same damn parts, but are playing in different keys (for some reason), and somehow one will be playing, like, a whole step lower, even though they are both set to the same notes (which you can visually see on the Piano Roll).. and if i move the one that is off in sound, down two steps from the other one, they'll play the same notes, but obviously something is wrong... on top of that, somehow even things that don't have pitches (in the program - that i know of..), like a drum beat, seem to get offset in pitch.. ???? maybe it's just my imagination, but i could swear this is happening.. how the hell does a drum beat's (an 'Open Cuica') pitch change...? again, maybe i'm just imagining this...

this is all without touching a single damn Key-change setting/controller at all..

another thing that just came to mind, that is really annoying.. is that every time i start Cakewalk, i have to change channel 10 in the Instrument Definitions to show General MIDI Drums rather than regular General MIDI - so that in the Piano Roll view, it shows percussion instruments and notation rather than the non-percussion default piano keys... why do i have to do this every single time i start Cakewalk?? it even has 'Save Changes for Next Session' always checked, but yet every single time i start the program, i have to change this setting..

i'm considering getting Sonar 4 (since i own Pro Audio 9, and can get Sonar 4 for about $150 or so), but i'm hesitant, considering all the crap i've had to put up with, with Pro Audio 9..

do you guys have the same problems? is it just me doing something wrong in the software? (perhaps where the over-complication really comes in - because sometimes it is the case that i'm doing something wrong, even though i'd really want to blame the program for being over-complex and counter-intuitive..)

I've been running Cakewalk9 for a few years now and have NO problems. As a matter of fact, I also own Vegas (all legal and above board) and while it's a great program, I prefere Cakewalk to it.

wow :)

Pro Audio 9 over Vegas? (i've never used Vegas, but it looked nice when it first came out)

Any day. Cakewalk seems a little more top heavy but in the long run (well, to me anyway) it keeps you from accidentally screwing yourself (by always asking you if you really ment to do that everytime you perform a function). I don't know how many times I've accidentally slid a track while using Vegas and discover it later when something just doesn't sound right. In Cakewalk, if you slide a track (or just about any function) you get the "are you sure?" prompt. I will say that the learning curve for Vegas isn't near as steep as Cakewalk's but it ain't so bad that you can't get your arms around it. Now ProTools (which I also owned) was a pain in the ASS.

czar - i dont want to be jumped on , but if your open minded try the demoes of some of my favorite software...
powertracks (pgmusic.com), n track, traktion, magix music studio,
and multitrackstudio.com. the market is changeing . and all the ones ive listed are under 100 bucks and superb value for money imho.
i use magix plus powertracks. all i'll ever need.
peace.
at a minimum give powertracks a try - i think you will be surprised. note the new tc helicon feature for creating vocal harmonies. neat stuff.

heh.. why do you say you don't want to be jumped on? :)

thanks for the advice.. do any of you think i will be happy with a $150 upgrade to Cakewalk Sonar 4 Studio?

re ...jumped on.
pulse - some people get stuck in their ways, and refuse to believe there are other alternatives for cheaper like 49 bucks for powertracks.
markets change, products change, and some people just refuse to believe a 49 buck product will produce great songs. so i get attacked sometimes.
which upsets me when i'm just trying to help people from my own experiences.
or get accused of being in league with some vendor whci is ridiculous. i'm just a happy user whose been recording and trying to improve my self in recording for 20 years.
anyway if your sceptical just try the demoes of what i listed.
you WILL BE SURPRISED !
peace.

What I'm surprised with is that no one has mentioned how amazingly OLD Pro Audio 9 is.

Me, I'm a happy Sonar 3 user, and before I was a happy Sonar 2 user. I can't say I was a happy PA user, though. In Sonar, I've personally never seen problems like your weird pitches or instrument definitions not getting saved.

Still, it sounds like you are not hugely invested in cakewalk, so look at alternatives (including the lower priced alternatives like manning suggests) and try to figure out what you need exactly. Sonar 4 might be overkill for you.

yea, PA9 is quite old.. i got it about 5 or 6 years ago, i think.. doesn't seem like it's been that long, but - wow.. but i've had problems with it since the day i got it..

thanks for the suggestions.

I've been using PA 9 for several years. I bought Sonar 1, tried it for a few days, and never used it again. I don't have any of the problems you describe...

wow all you guys still using PA9 shock me. How do you get along with those ridiculous high latencies with MME drivers?

No problem. I don't track to Cakewalk, I only edit with it. I track with an HD24.

My luck changed when I got Sonar and Win XP happening...all those years with Win98, WinME, Cakewalk6, thru Pro AUdio - somethin was always goin wrong.

Everything works fine now for the past year or 2...

i mainly use it for MIDI, and it still acts retarded..

why did you stop using Sonar 1 after a few days? you go back to PA9? why?

I'm a PA9 user too, although I haven't tried anything else. The problems I have are probably related to WinXP w/Celeron. Every now and then I open a project and discover my Aark24 device missing and al the tracks have a MIDI sourcfe instead of an Aark track. After a reboot or two things are mostly back to normal but instead of, say, track 1 being assigned Aark channel 1 (left 1&2) it'll be changed to aark channel 3 or some other track.

Also, the Aardvark Manager occassionally eats up CPU doing who-knows-what. When I sit down to do audio stuff my PC acts like it has something else better to do. I recently tried ending unrelated processes from the Task Manager and solved some latency issues.

ive been using it 4 a year, i have very little latency, barely noticable. i idealize, experiment, track, record, mix, and master with PA9. i haven't gotten the chance to master yet, but it should be pretty easy. not to be an asshole, or assume anything, but it isn't a cracked copy, because they are highly unstable. i guess to each their own on programs. ive heard good things about Sonar 4 though.

I've used PA9 with ME for several years and haven't experienced any of the problems mentioned.

PA9 rocks!! and so do my parachute pants and mullet!

Sounds more like a pc problem than a PA9 problem.

I used PA9 for several years with Win95 & 98 with no problems what so ever. Now I'm using Sonar 3 & XP - still no problems.
:)

I prefer the PA9 interface. I'm an old-fashioned guy.

I use PA9 for two things:

1) recording and mixing digital audio (Aardvark Q10). Latency is not a problem for me, as I always record dry;

2) writing and arranging using MIDI, before I import the MIDI tracks into Finale.

I used to have problems when I ran Win98. Since going to XP, it's been very solid.
