I was warming up the drum kit the other day and out came this groove.
I put a little eq & reverb on and the bass drum started to sound almost Bonham-ish. So I threw on some guitars and keys - quite rough as it's all first takes, but I was pleased that the drum sound stayed there - I usually manage to lose the bass drum in a mix.
Any way see what you think at http://www.nowhereradio.com/nowhereradio/singles

It's called Funk Dont Stop. Any and all feedback welcome

Is it funk?

Yup. I think it qualifies!

You said you added a keyboard part but I couldn't hear it? What sound did you use?

The kick definitely was audible throughout the mix but, I guess because there wasn't a whole bunch of other stuff going on it was guaranteed a place in the sound. The kick may have actually been too loud in the mix but the playing was good. The cymbals could have been a touch louder.

I miss my wah pedal! I have one but its been busted for several years, just rotting away in a closet. I should get that fixed and torture you guys with some of that kind of stuff.

Write some lyrics for that thing! and make it Funky:cool:

Sounds really cool. That is a great kick drum sound, but maybe a little loud in the mix. With the reverb on the guitar it's sounds kind of psychadelic funk.

It's groovy, but it isn't jazz.

So....it's funk

:D

that is a good drum sound but the bass drum is too loud.. maybe because there's only soft jamming going on.. the guitar sounds like you were just noodling..

if your asking about the drums, they sound good.. bass drum might be too loud in relation to the snare, but it's hard to say without hearing a bass guitar.. the guitar that's there is pretty low..

I thought I heard some bass after the first minute or so.. not sure because it was so low..

BULLSHIT :D

Funk... break it down... wow... the attack on the bass drum? What
a pedal/beater.. sounds pretty looose/loud. Almost like an old-school
rap kick. Aafrika Bambaataa I'm thinkin... funky bass is a bit low
in the mix. Kick beater is too loud in your mix.

Nice wah guitars. Snare's about right--just bring up the bass/down the
kick around it... there's plenty of headroom.

If you really want those drums to sound Bonham-ish you're gonna have to get rid of some of the muffling, hit 'em a lot harder, and mic 'em from farther away.;)

It is funky though.......

Guys, thanks for the feedback.

Ghost - yeh the (inaudible) bass part was played on the keyboard as I don't have a bass. Kick too loud? Looks like I overdid the low boost. All the drums are on one track so I'm a little constrained in what I can pull in or out. First time I've really messed around with the wah...

fprod - Thanks man - ha psychedelic, I always did like Parliament

Pedullist - heh maybe the bum notes qualify as jazz?

B Sabbath - yeh it was just a noodle. I wanted to record the little riff so I could maybe use it later. When I played it back, it didn't sound that bad so what the hell I thought I'd mix it and have something to go with the drums. Kept the guitar low to help conceal the mistakes....and there is 'bass' there but not quite enough obviously

songbird - Thanks a lot man

participant - Bambaata? Wow, there's a compliment. Yeh you're right, the bass is too low and the kick too loud. I can get that sorted

M Brane - the drums actually don't have any muffling apart from an old jersey in the bass drum. I used a bass drum mic, and an overhead condensor. The snare does sound kinda dull though. However my delta44 has just arrived and when I get another couple of mics I'm hoping to dramatically improve the sound I get

Thanks again guys, really appreciate you listening and commenting. I can remix this now using your feedback and inflict it on the guys at the jam next Thursday night. It's a real bonus getting mixing suggestions like this, coz those guys are harsh critics, and cruel haha

You can't have funk without the bass so turn up the funkin' bass. Apart from that it was quite funky. Keep working on it and see if you can develop it into a solid piece funk.

Thanks Shockadelica.
I've remixed it as per all the good suggestions received, with the bass more up-front and the drums back just a tad.

I'd like to put some vocal to it, but I don't have a clue where to start with a vocal melody
