is it better to use USB connection or MIDI connection for midi controllers?

M-Audio Axiom Pro 61 works with a DAW and the faders and other controllers can control the DAW directly, without having to going back and forth the mouse and the midi controller.

But would this functionality only work if I connected the MIDI controller to the computer through USB, or would it still work if I connected the controller to the audio interface via MIDI in and to the computer via USB?

They should both work as long as you have the proper drivers installed. It's the same either way.
